Yes gulf stream drift,as it does at times, was mentioned pete. Not stopping as it may with desalination. It relies on salinity and if over diluted with fresh water it could weaken and stop.If that stops we will freeze. When did the Thames freeze over?
The Thames and most other major European rivers froze during winter months between 1400 and 1850 the period of grand solar minimum.
Theres nothing unusual about these climate and solar cycles theyre known as Milankovitch cycles.
(Also see the wheeler drought cycle.)
We are heading toward another grand solar minimum around 2030. Theres another 11 year solar cycle till then.
During these cycles we will see peaks of extreme weather. Each cycle closer to grand solar minimum sees lower solar activity and fewer sunspots and flares and greater weather extremes.
The current cycle has extremes that will peak in 2021. Therefore next years weather will be far worse than so far experienced this year and 2021 considerably worse than 2020.
That means in a nutshell we will have extreme summer temperatures and equally extreme winter temperatures and the regions that experience these variations wont be historically usual.
Theyll be record breakers.
This year for instance the arctic temperatures were 60 degrees c above normal averaging 5 C daytime whilst areas like Florida basked in - 20c on occasions...while the west coast suffered hot droughts and wildfires.
Theres a good probability that the polar vortex will be displaced again this year bringing much warmer air to the North polar region and cold polar air displaced and pushing south, possibly over US or UK or leading to another high pressure over central and Eastern Europe and a return of the Beast from the East scenario or a very wet windy winter and bitter spring.
Theres always speculation over what will happen and equally hard to predict the exact nature of weather 3 months ahead.
However, worth noting that in real life, long standing weather records have tumbled like dominoes this year more than recent.Large numbers of violent hurricane and Typhoon systems early in the season.Early snows have occurred in central US and record snow falls in the Rockies unusually early in the Fall.
That only points to some unusual and unpredictable changes to the otherwise 'normal' winter patterns going on.
No one really knows the answer because the current data that points to one scanario changes radically to suggest something else thats not previously been modelled or expected compared to more predictable past decades.
No one is going to go out on limb and say its going to be a terrible winter (except the Express who do it every year) because they may well be proven wrong and undermine their credibility (see the Express scenario).
Just to add confusion to the mix theres an ongoing progression to a magnetic pole reversal anytime within the next 80 yrs thats accelerating year by year and that last occurred around 750, 000 years ago prior to human historical records (so apart from geological records weve no real idea what exactly will happen)
That pole migration is already causing a noticeable weakening of the magnetosphere,(the magnetic field around the Earth that protects us from solar and space radiation).
The weakening allows solar radiation to 'excite' and heat the atmosphere and radically alter the dynamics of climate and weather systems (to our detriment as it will mean more extreme weather) On top of what we are ourselves doing to heat the atmosphere through human activity.
In theory this would not seemingly matter because the sun is heading to solar minimum and less solar activity but in reality the Earth is being seriously affected by fairly minor solar flare events and is causing technological issues on a regular basis and is affecting global weather.
What do you do for winter then? Forget the doom and gloom, educate yourselves(the truth is out there on the internet for all to see)
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, make sensible and appropriate preparation for winter (as anyone in most northern latitudes outside the UK would) ....then your daily life wont be compromised too seriously.
For some bizarre reason the British seem to think as an island we are immune to catastrophic weather events and in any case its the governments responsibility and the government will save us all....wrong.
Its never really a good time preparing for the unexpected when its already bearing down on you or engulfing you.
