I like IC's viewpoint. It reminds me of something I read somewhere: "Strive to be the person your dog thinks you are..." Never heard that phrase before,it is brilliant :-)

Most of the positives in life involve alcoholism. As do most of the negatives. I'm not proud of the fact that alcohol seems to have played a big part in my life and the lives (and deaths) of my friends. And indeed my family, looking back. I can go weeks without a drink but I know that every now and then I will go on a bender. That's it, not proud of it but I'm admitting to it to my friends on here in the hope others will identify.

I suppose really it depends on the degree of negativity in which it affects your life and your health. how much control you have on it,or it has on you If its ruining your health and/or relationships, causing you to be wildly antisocial and bringing about your early demise then yes its pretty negative. I think you have to balance the positives and negatives of everything in life. Alcohol is just one aspect. I drink most days, not excessively or habitually or dependent on it but i drink because it has positive benefits on my pain relief and my mood. Years of prescribed opiate painkillers ruined my liver and my life so i got off them completely but im told because i drink and get some pain relief from it and feel better in myself im endangering my health! Go figure that one. Im not antisocial or drinking excessively (i used to when i was younger) im drinking because i find it beneficial to my health and circumstances. End of the day your going to die of something, the government doesnt give a fuck what that something is so long as youre not costing them anything via the NHS hence the non stop health lecturing about drink and cigarettes but theyre quite happy to keep taking tax from your little pleasures and hope youll kerp doing so.If they really gave a shit theyd be banned. Theres no shame in admitting youve a drink problem if you have one.Theres no shame in enjoying a drink in moderation either if it helps.

was a time i could not imagine a day without a drink, if i had 20 quid i,d drink it or 50 or a 100 always top shelf never was a beer drinker. could or would not leave a pub until A, was skint or B got thrown out because like big bear once i got the taste i cannot stop, even now i limit myself to a shandy whilst out.i like being drunk = no pain and i,m a happy drunk except if i have even a taste of lager then i,ll fight the world until i fall asleep

So glad I don't smoke or drink much. I'm not being smug, and I have nothing but respect for anybody that controls their problem drinking.

I can also go weeks without or limit myself to a shandy a night, I can make a pint last three hrs if having a pub lunch with family. If I’m driving I’ll forego that pint. But , sometimes the “ need” kicks in , and if on the lager I’ll start dropping vodkas in it, then it’ll be neat vodka. Used to be a fighty drunk, but mellowed now, just a happy one. Also I can still stop before I go to far, ie:- can walk ( stagger ) out of a pub instead of being carried.
