His Dad shook his hand and said good luck and his mum made him some sandwiches So different now, if two blokes started talking to a teenage boy now everyone would assume they were grooming them to be abused. It's sad really.

i left just before 16 then straight into dairy work soon discovered the old farmer had an unhealthy interest in young dairy maids and left to be a full time groom.Pay was low but I got to ride big posh horses all day. Then, any job you fancied you could get into.No tv,no internet ,no fear of getting nuked or having no job.Politics was on the radio or in the papers if you were interested,I wasnt.I cant remember any of the big pressures or uncertainty youngsters nowadays seem driven by.

Yes I agree with all of that, Cricket, people talk about kids today being pampered and mollycoddled but I think they have a whole world of pressure on their shoulders that we just didn't have. Carers advice wasn't a big thing in school because you could get a job without any training or qualifications and, whilst it might not have paid a fortune, a lot of that sort of work either came with accommodation or you could just rent a room somewhere and get on with it. I think in a lot of ways we had a better time of it. My friends kids don't seem happy for the most part, they're under constant pressure at school and college and it's much harder to get a Saturday job or work in the holidays now if you're under 16. Then you've got the issues of a lot of what they learn in school not being that practical - the lady in the cafe (where the lad wasn't allowed to take the money from me) said she'd still have to check the bill even if he could take the cash because most of the kids she employs can't add up. Yet one of my first Saturday jobs was in a cake shop where you totted it up in your head as you took the order and that was how they tested you for the job. It was the same in pubs I worked in - one of them didn't even have a till, just a wooden change tray to keep the coins separate and you put the notes underneath. I don't think we've done kids a lot of favours with the whole technology drive, I think we were lucky to get chucked out the house all day to go and play

Most kids are abused by people they know, sad but true, and although the papers are full of horror stories I think most people are still decent enough that if a kid was lost or something they'd help them (or at least I hope that's the case!). One thing that's nice about where I live is that the kids do all play outside and they're so sweet and friendly, they quite often come and knock on the door just for a chat. One of them needed to borrow the phone to ring his mum at work because his mobile didn't have any credit and I gave him my landline to use, he'd never seen one! Bless him, he didn't have a clue what to do with it, I had to show him, it did make me smile

Happily I'm not old enough to think in shillings! Wasn't it 5p to the shilling though?
