...and if so what? Recently we have been getting more visitors through Google and other searches, and this has meant more new members over the past week. However, just as many visitors have looked and left, thinking there's only two sections! As much as I post that there's more to the forum, those threads and posts don't always get read and visitors don't always get that there's more to see than two public sections! I also understand that we don't want to show the whole forum to everybody on the Internet who comes across it. There's been fifteen hits from Google today alone.
So what would be the best way to do this?

Do you want quality or quantity?

I would have to say quality, but until a guest signs up I don't know if they will be a top ten poster or a lurker. It's that simple. I obviously don't mind people coming and reading the forum, but there will be nothing to read if nobody posts! Just ask hedgemumper

Nah! go for open door, you are always going to get lurkers. If they are that bothered they will register anyway and not post. Or use somebody elses login. I think I know who you mean but don't get paranoid.

Is there a setting to allow the other section heading titles to be visible but not the content of them? Dont know why youre so bothered by it though, ypure not gettimg paid for link clicks, proboard are. People always look, lurk or leave forums without registering usually because of subjects they search for and forum content comes up in the search results, much of which theyve no interest in and why they dont stay or register. Happens all the time when im researching stuff.

But I don't get it , I would not put anything on the internet I would not want the world to see . Why is a public forum worse than a closed one ?

OK , I have thought it through ! If its open any random can post any shit ? I must say I find closed groups on facebook seem to have a lot of 'trouble makers ' though .

Sorry vw, if it all goes public I'll stop posting, i may not know the members on here but feel more secure than in a open to any tosser group.

Sorry maybe I didn't make myself clear. What I meant was making one or two more sections public, not the whole lot! That would have to be done by agreement. The other thought I had was to make a new section and move a few threads. I think the very biggest reason to join a forum is to join in.

Groups on fakebook are no different to forums, youll always get argumentative trolls or folks using the access to spam others. The point of closed groups though is the content posted is not visible to the general public or search engines. Public groups and content are searchable and the content appears in search engines. If people by a majority here want this forum to be wholly public so everyone can see every post thats perfectly fine but I wont be stopping here.
Most admin controls on forums have a setting to allow sub forums or thread section titles to be visible but not the content, which might let new arrivals see theres more to the site than two piblic sections but often the reason people use forums is to mingle with others they feel comfortable with and may become friends with and chat about some stuff some of which might be very personal experiences or health matters. Ive had to move content from the general chat section that members have posted because its been very personal information and they may not have realised it can be seen by non members. I think it makes people wary of posting threads or photos about their life if its inadvertently being accessible by the entire internet. Its a violation of their privacy they probably dont want so wont post anything....which will make opening the forum up to a wider audience a completely pointless exercise. But again i dont see why there needs to be a change to how it is, if people are interested theyll join and join in. If theyre just joining to be nosey and then disappear again what have we gained? Making threads visible will only encourage more of that but wont necessarily increase the post content. 'Dont fix what aint broke'

I'm unlikely to post if it becomes all public. I post here to chat with friends, and whereas I know that nothing is truly hidden online, I still don't want to be shouting stuff out loud to the whole world.

Totally agree with NC and corvus. I haven't found a way to make titles but not content visible to the public, so the rest of the forum will stay private. Also we are not here to provide content scraper bots with material.
