NomadCris well that's disappointing. I thought Scotland was more level headed than that. Lol... It's been captured several years ago by a party not interested in Independence or democracy, just doubling down on it's devolved powers and authoritarianism. They'll lose votes bigtime and deservedly so but we shouldn't gloat because Bi-partisan Westminster is slowly and quietly imposing the same surveillance and control laws and once Freeport's Charter City and Special Enterprise Zone programs get fully underway and everything is sold to private entities we've lost our democracy for good.

Just popped back to make sure everyone is fully aware of new Orwellian laws coming into effect in Scotland in April regarding so called 'hate crime' comments that dont just involve comments made by peope living in Scotland but by anyone whos comments can be read online in Scotland and therefore can be investigated by Police Scotland. Furthermore even if those comments are not deemed of a criminal nature the ' offence' can still be recorded against you for posterity. This can include any comments made about any social group - Catholic Protestant Islam Israel Gay Trans, GC critical, women, political affiliations etc etc The list is endless and entirely subject to the judgement of the investigating authority and goes way beyond stamping out hate crime but in effect silencing anyone who criticises anyone where offence may be perceived to have been caused or felt. Obviously this applies to social media and here on this forum so please be aware. People have already served jail time for this or months of traumatic police investigation and seizing of elecronic device or property and found ultimately to have done nothing wrong. Its as much the process as the laws that are there to silence. Ultimately these laws may be overturned by the UK Supreme court at appeal but until then this is potentially the dangerous reality. Some background www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/snp-mp-joanna-cherry-accuses-scottish-government-of-mccarthyism-over-hate-crime-law/ar-BB1kuzaPWings of Scotland is a political newsletter critical of politics in Scotland for many years but may be forced to close because it will be impossible to make serious criticism. Statement wingsoverscotland.com/into-darkness/ Nice to see you back, Cris. It's insane, at the same time as this Police Scotland have apparently announced that they won't investigate low level crime if evidence isn't provided - ie, unless you've got it on camera they won't even bother making enquiries. Alongside budget cuts so enormous that they are talking about closing school libraries near us. One upside I can see is maybe people will go back to speaking face to face instead of online now, personally I'd prefer that anyway but the whole process is a scary one for sure.

NomadCris well that's disappointing. I thought Scotland was more level headed than that. I've been surprised at what I've unearthed since we moved here Vannie, mostly disability related where we're concerned but quite a lot of stuff that looks good on the surface (free prescriptions, cash bonus for unpaid carers twice a year, automatic cold weather payments, cheaper water costs etc etc) seems to me to cover up a lack of meaningful and useful support for people who have disabilities, health problems and any other barrier - ie, make it more comfortable for them on benefits because it's cheaper than providing proper support so that they don't need to claim benefits. The attitude toward disability from social workers has been shocking, even for an old fart like me who's used to people's attitudes being less than helpful at times. Scottish people themselves have been utterly lovely but it feels to me like the wheels are coming off. Lots of grumbling about immigration and housing issues as well, much the same as I heard in England, and problems with nice areas becoming unliveable due to incomers buying up property to use as holiday lets and pushing out the locals. Again, same thing has happened in parts of England. It's a good time to hide, I think Lol

Alongside budget cuts so enormous that they are talking about closing school libraries near us. One upside I can see is maybe people will go back to speaking face to face instead of online now, personally I'd prefer that anyway but the whole process is a scary one for sure. The entire saga has been a self inflicted disaster by the SNP and Scottish Greens who enabled it. They've been captured by Stonewall and trans activist movement and in an attempt to introduce legislation to prevent discrimination against trans people (which was fair enough but trans are already protected by the equality act provisions) Sturgeon went overboard and in their GRA Gender Recognition Act made it discriminatory to deny self identifying trans men from female only spaces and made it easier for men or women to self identify as the gender they chose and has created a whole festering boil of a mess attacking womens rights and already established gay rights. Ie it's now seen as transphobic to describe yourself as gay or lesbian and transphobic to want to self identify as male or female or to want to protect female only spaces like toilets and changing rooms from males who wish to self identify as women. The whole issue has become highly weaponised and people forced out of jobs or publicly attacked. The GRA act was appealed in the Supreme court of the UK and never received assent so its not law so instead the SNP have come back with this Orwellian 'hate crime' bill amendment that comes into effect April 1. Scotland is highly sectarian anyway and there's lots of religious hate bubbling online so there's going to be literally thousands of people fall foul of this new law both for religious and gender issues along with many other things that may be seen as discriminatory or hate related abuse and also opens the door for the law to be maliciously weaponised by certain groups against individuals or organisations. It's a terrible piece of trash legislation and hopefully it will be struck down by the Supreme court but until then chaos will ensue and guaranteed the SNP will lose lots of seats in the 2026 election in Scotland if the law is not withdrawn before then. Considering the anger that's blown up in Scotland over it in the last few days I think the SNP are in big trouble and rightly so.

Again, same thing has happened in parts of England. It's a good time to hide, I think Lol The Scottish Government achieved a lot for Scottish people in many areas as you say but have been extremely lacking in others. It's not helped their cause at all alienating voters with their crusade over gender issues instead of getting independence done with the mandate they had but Sturgeons never really wanted Independence and nor really does the new leadership and the UK government has been clever to pile on the political pressure by reducing funding for Scotland, quietly encouraging large employers to relocate to England to undercut Scottish revenue and now it's forcing 2 very large Freeport areas in the south of Scotland and it's Charter City and Enterprise zones on Scotland which will in effect be unregulated tax havens for corporate entities further denying the Scottish government of income and loss of democratic control. This is dystopian future for Scotland as well as for the rest of the UK. In a few years (2 maybe )voting for change won't be an option regardless where you live. Labour are as committed to this future as much and the Tories are. Don't expect much to improve.

Not quite enough room in this Telegraph article to mention that DEFRA has been busy sponsoring farmers to take their land out of food production, in order to meet the Terra Carta target of putting 30% of the UK's landmass in 'nature recovery' by 2030 (a considerable rush, though I don't mean half past eight), or that DEFRA has had to row back on its unlimited offer under the Sustainable Farming Incentive. If the rain does ever stop it will only be attributed to....climate change. It's almost as though there's some sort of link between this newspaper and this government. 👇 www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/09/farmers-warn-food-shortages-no-harvest-world-war-two-rain/
