Yes there's several derelict former rail routes in my area thanks to that twat. Dr Beeching will always be associated with carving up the railway system but the sad truth was that many of the old branch lines had become redundant. Road transport had become cheaper and quicker than rail The strange thing now is that a lot of the ones that survived have now become viable again.

There was also a deliberate coercion by car manufacturers- one in particular - to push Government minister friends to develop road motorway networks over rail. The rail network was pruned back hard with no real logic or thought for possible future transport needs. That pruning left most of Devon and Cornwall,West Wales and lots of Scotland commercially cut off from the rest of the UK and why their growth remained stunted for decades. He did non of us any favours only his industrial friends. He chopped up the railways with no thought for consequences just like the colonialists chopped up Africa between them ignoring cultural and ethnic divides and why weve got the constant disputes and wars. Ignorance and shortsightedness on an industrial scale by people who supposedly were the UKs 'best minds' of the time. And its still happening...wealthy idiots destroying the country.

WW2 and then national service created a large number of lorries owned by the forces that the government then auctioned off from time to time (still do today) People who bought these lorries then went looking for work and haulage companies sprung up all over the place and were able to under cut the grossly inefficient and wasteful Nationalised railway companies very easily. Less and less freight was going by rail and more and more by road. The rest, as they say, is history.

True but it still made freight transport by lorry from those far remote areas uneconomical and expensive and pretty much killed the local fishing industries. It also killed the passenger service to rural areas stone dead and left people relying on council buses in rural areas which now there are virtually non because private operators dont run anywhere theres insufficient profit. Its always been the visionless short termism of government here and unregulated opportunist predatory capitalism thats wrecked services and government expected private companies to provide them but it never works out that way so we have shite public transport services and Europe still has the best modern rail networks and affordable services.

Anyone who works ferrets would know that rats fight back and ferrets soon learn that easier prey is less painful, just goes to show how you can't trust the judgment of the decision makers.
