Actually, the original Rambo film (First Blood) was good and confronted really contemporary issues about attitudes in America and the treatment of veterans after the Vietnam war.
I read the book before I saw the film and that was really thought provoking, I would describe it as a classic on a par with Catch 22. The film was still close enough to the book to realise the social hypocracy and small minded prejudice it was about.
I'm still not sure that Stalone was the right choice to play John Rambo but hey
After that the Rambo franchise just went silly and tainted the original message, that there were deeply damaged veterans who were abandoned and subsequently victimised by the country they had fought for.
About 20 years ago I was in Washington DC and beside the Vietnam Wall was a stall put up by a Vietnam Veteran about the MIAs (Missing in Action), POWs abandoned at the end of the Vietnam war by the American govt by denying they existed. I spent about three hours talking to him and he gave me some literature.
After that I was hooked on the MIAs issues for many years. Later Rambo films touched on the subject but were rubbish

Yes to the Wicker man, a top film and one like no other.
Wasn't Pappillion based on a true story? that was also cracking.
Another couple : Pulp Fiction
and From dusk till Dawn.

The Medusa Touch, a sublime 1970's horror staring the great Richard Burton.
The Nan Who Haunted Himself staring another great actor, Roger Moore.

My favourite movie of all time... The World's Fastest Indian. I love the shed shelf with all the melted pistons on - offerings to the God of speed.
