I sold my car the other day. It was way too small, very heavy on fuel and just generally no good for anything but going to the shops, which I can bike to. It's a weird feeling, I'm half heartedly looking for another but with no sense of urgency. For one reason or another, mostly an unreliable vehicle, I doubt I've driven more than 2K miles in the last year or longer, so I'm waiting to see if I can manage without permanently. It is better for the environment if I stay car free, but I will likely crumble and give in at some point when my longing to get to the coast takes over. A dilemma isn't it. If I was younger and lived in a developed country with actual services and reliable public transport I'd probably give up cars. I ditched my van finally because it needed over 2k of welding to get it MOTd and did only 25mpg anyway and slower than a slow thing and being a LWB high top wasn't the most convenient shopping vehicle especially in supermarket car parking areas and retail parks were out as they've all got height barriers round here. The van is now a shed until I decide whether to get another van to convert. Like you I live in countryside that's pretty hilly and nearest public transport point is a two mile walk. I may as well walk to town. The roads are narrow and mostly wrecked by giant tractors and never gritted or ploughed in winter it's up to local farmers to clear. The council doesn't have the money for snow clearance tho plenty of money to pay it's overpaid executives. So I'm currently running a 19yr old diesel Freelander that's done 195000, cost me 800quid 3 years ago does about 50mpg and capable of coping with everything I'm likely to encounter round here in terms of weather and it's big enough for shopping and carting bulky things I've skanked off of Freecycle or locals and getting building materials and gas cylinders so really it's pretty much essential even though I don't do more than a 1000 miles a year. If the roads were better and I had the money I'd be tempted to buy an electric cargo bike but that's not an option until I pick up my state pension in 2026 and they still need to do something about road maintenance round here. So the workaround for now is the car and a bike rack for taking my bikes somewhere I can ride that's safe and manageable.I may get an ebike but I can't see me ditching the car unless forced to for medical reasons affecting my license. In which case id probably have to move anyway. I realised some years ago I should have emigrated to the Netherlands where bikes and public transport take priority over the absurd devotion to cars that we have in the UK.

One of the major problems I have with bikes/ebikes and something I always forget about until I decide to take up cycling again, is carpal tunnel syndrome. It is the main reason I gave up triathlon. If I did a decent ride, 50/60 miles, the pain in my arms and even shoulders would be excruciating for days afterwards.
Because the problem starts in my wrists I bought myself some very stiff wrist braces and so far they seem to be working. My hands get pins and needles and my fingers numb pretty quickly, but it doesn't get worse than that and I'm not likely to ever do the distances I used to. (About 350 miles a week.)

For similar skeletal issues I've considered a recumbent etrike or quadricyle but they're not common in UK but loads of variants in the US.At least with electric assistance you're not putting so much effort through your arms and wrists so maybe you'll be able do more. One of my friends isn't the most fit nor active of overweight TV addicted couch potatoes but since he's bought a folding ebike he's out almost every day on it and not struggling with stuff like he used to.

I wanted a recumbant for a long time, specifically for the carpal tunnel thing. Even if they were readily available though, I'm not sure I would trust drivers not to run me down as you are less visible than even a normal bike.
On a motorbike wearing all the fluorescent gear and trying to be as in your face as possible, I had a guy drive into me, looking me in the eye as he ran me over.
Just another Sorrymatedidn'tseeyou accident.

Thats also a big problem. They expect us as pedestrians cyclists disabled etc to be careful, hyper aware, wear bright highly visible clothes and not be distracted and we still get injured or killed because the A hole behind the steering wheel as an entitled driver doesn't have to drive carefully or be aware of surroundings or other people bc 'im in my car' ive ridden thousands of miles on the roads and lost count of the times ive been knocked off my bike and i don't bounce like i used to.I stick to offroad mountain biking and boarding now ,its safer.Until we get separated cycling infrastructure like the Netherlands has thats how it will stay.

Thanks gist.the arm feels like I've been pulled over by a German Sheppard!not much more uncomfortable than the usual feeling in my shoulders, but haven't had that for a while!hay man arrived half 5 last night.I just couldn't lift that last bale in the barn.no duties today except walk the lil monkey, off lead today🙄 I hope it gets better soon, Grace, it's a horrible feeling. A friend's collie took off after a squirrel with me on the end of a lead once, honestly thought I'd dislocated my shoulder, I think it's the sudden jolt as much as anything. We're not built for it lol. Hope it's not so sore today.

Well I leapt out of bed this morning with alacrity, after opening my eyes and seeing a gigantic spider on my bedroom wall. I tiptoed about looking for a big enough container to trap and release it outside, and got stepladders so I could reach it without startling it; giant house spiders are FAST! Managed to catch it, carefully took it into the garden, to discover that it was, in fact, deceased,an ex-spider. For a moment I thought I had trapped a moulted skin which would have been worse, as that would have meant a bigger spider was roaming around, but no. Late evening and first thing in the morning is my least resilient time to spiders, I hate catching sight of one when I'm just going off to sleep or just waking up. Glad it wasn't a troublesome one for you. There is a need for spider catching kit isn't there. I keep wondering about one of those long handled things you're supposed to be able to catch them in easily but I never get round to it.

Well yesterday for me seemed to be dominated by the cat. Three ticks, two dead mice, two clumps of matted fur which I have squirted olive oil around as per the lady on YouTube who reckons it's the best way to get matted fur off cats and then he came in covered in bird poo so I had to wash that off. I should have called him Pickle as he always seems to be in one lol.

Yup, it is rolling over half asleep and seeing one toddling along the wall or staring you in the eyes from about a foot away. Every time I whinge to myself about stiff joints stopping me from doing things, I remember how quickly I can move without prompting in the unexpected presence of an arachnid. It is very rare I will consider removing one from it's environment and chucking it outside, but I can't cope with adult male giant house spiders; their legs are too long, they are too fast and too unpredictable. I only evict them from my bedroom though.

I'm really not bothered by spiders, but I occasionally feel guilty about removing the webs from corners. I don't usually see the spiders then though, so maybe the webs are abandoned?
