You know youβre getting old when you remember the road sweepers, not the modern lorry, but the man with the little cart, brush and shovel

when i were a lad, one man looked after several miles of road, with a barrow pickaxe and a shovel and for major jobs a steam engine rolled up with two more men and towing their van / tea hut , we use to nick the coal and big lumps of pitch

As a kid every village had a roadman, usually an old codger with his shovel and barrow. Drains were kept clear, footpaths swept and verges cut back so water could run off. Biggest screwup out the councils dropping them. Blocked/ overgrown drains have caused flooding, the roadsides are breaking up and overgrown and footpaths are the same.

There's an old guy round our way who spends time every day trimming footpaths & hedges & cleaning out ditches. He's just a guy in his 80s now, does it all for nowt & in all weather's. Does it just for the pleasure of seeing his village looking tidy.
