The great weekend would be a weekend where you have complete freedom with no responsibilities or restraints financial or otherwise.
If you could choose exactly what you would love to do this weekend or any weekend from friday evenbing to sunday night , ( I know some of us do ) what would you get upto?
I would choose park up friday night and have a couple of very nice glasses of red or top quality cognac (brandy) then go to bed early and sleep beautifully then to wake up in the mountains surrounded by snowy peaks and amazing views next to a fresh mountain river and make coffee on a little campfire whilst watching the mountain animals doing their thing around me. After breakfast a days walking out in the fresh air with many wolf and bear sitings and a lovely lunchtime picnic and then a night under canvas in a stunning and sheltered spot at around two and a half thousand metres to enjoy everything around me,especially the most excellent sunset in the west. I would love a dry thunder storm to engulf the mountain range for a couple of hours in the evening,as to be at such a height and in such a place when a mountain storm goes through is quite exciting, scary and exhillerating. Those who have experienced one will tell you how awesome the power of it can be and how the mountainside shakes, brilliant. After the storm passes maybe another glass of cognac or two whilst reaching out and touching the stars and enjoying that great feeling of solitude.
Sunday would mean waking up to an awe inspiring sunrise and the feeling of peace then a nice climb-walk upto a peak at around three thousand metres where one can feel so insignificant as a physical presence yet huge with a spiritual presence. Take time to enjoy the panoramic view looking down over the smaller mountains where then a nice loop through yet again stunning countryside with stopping off at a mountain refuge and have a very convivial and tasty lunch with other mountain and nature lovers.
Getting back to the van late afternoon with some lovely warmth from the sun and finding a swiss chalet type bar-cafe in a great place with a big terrace and a great view of the mountains that I have just trekked on. The bar would sell the most delicious local produce at correct prices and would have cool and refreshing locally made ale on tap.
Back to the van to get clean and enjoy the fire and put my feet up with a good book, film or some chilled music and finish off the cognac.
Thinking about it,I will be doing stuff just like this in a few weeks time down in the pyranees :-)
Anyhow - what would you lovely hippies choose to do on your perfect weekend ?

Sounds like a great weekend IC . Will it not be a bit snowy at 2500 mtres in the Pyranees at this time of year ? I went climbing round Gavarnie one October , and there was a lot of Ice forming at that sort of height. I guess you know what conditions there are like better than me . I would spend my weekend been magicly transported to the Kullu valley in Himachal Pradesh where I would spend the 2 days trekking in the mountains staying in local lodges, eating lovely local food, drinking local plum wine and apple brandy and of course smoking wacking great chillums of the finest hashish in the world .

Lovely. Gavernie is a beautiful area with some great out there parkups-but my bestest memory of there was that it was where I got to see marmottes for the very first time and spent a couple of days out on the planes enjoying their company, may also have had some of the best hassish in the world at that time too !!
I did think about the snow levels after I said all of that. I shall be a little lower than that when I am down in the mountains on the french-spanish-andorra border near vicdessos over the festive season and shall not be getting upto the sommett. There will of already been a lot of snow and I prefer to stick to rock and a few small spots of ice. Something else that I forgot to put into my perfect weekend sunday is something I do whenever I am in that part of l'ariege pyranees and that would be to nip into ax les thermes and take my shoes off and put them into one of the thermal baths that are placed around the village. Very relaxing at any time , but after a good walk - pure bliss :-)

The only thermes I visited in the Pyrenees were at Cauterets and they smelt a bit eggy Some of them do pong a bit,and your term eggy sums up the sulphuric smell perfectly. Sometimes it is not too bad, moreso summertime it gets a tad whiffy !

My perfect weekend in the mountains also needs to have mountainsides full of wildflowers,so am thinking now it would be in the late spring when the snows are melting :-)

My perfect weekend would be a cottage somewhere very remote, enough logs for a good fire, plenty of food, nothing flash, tins are fine. Some Merlot and a couple of good books. (plus a very naughty woman of course)

A 45ft yacht moored off a Caribbean beach, litre bottle of baby oil, and Charlize Theron....
I'm a simple soul.
