Bonjour a tous ( hello everyone) I was just in the vets the other day getting the rabies jab done for cockney and she announced that he has got osteo athritis coming in and recommended that I buy "Flexadin advanced" to help him and swears that it is really worth buying !! I asked her about using turmeric but she said that it would not be strong enough, though I do admit to not trusting any profession that is tied into pharmaceutical companies for financial gain. I would love to hear from any of you that have treated a getting old large dog with lower back pain and hear what you would recommend for me to try helping him with. I have read the amazon reviews on the Flexadin advanced and they are majoritively very good, but are they genuine comments or are they from flexadin employees !! What has worked for your four legged friends? Cockney is mainly still running around like a dog half his age and is having fun,but has had a bit of an off day today,as he does on rare occassions. He may well be back on form tomorrow. Your experience based thoughts please lovely people. Love and light Fly and cockney xx

Have you tried Turmeric...its an excellent anti inflammatory and you dont need much just mix it with something like 100% peanut butter to disguise the taste. Its not as likely to cause gut upsets like Ibuprofen can. Search 'Turmeric for dog ailments'.

Awwww I Be Sorry To Hear Of Beautiful Cockneys Troubles As Yes It Happens To Us All Both Man And Our Beloved Furry Bubaz.
My Beautiful Staffi Princess Lived To The Grand Age Of 19 Mans Years And Suffered With The Same As Your Beautiful Cockney Tol And She Still Had And Enjoyed A Happy Life:)
Yes Like Beautiful Cockney She Had Her Good Days And Her Off Days And I Was Too Told Of This Medicine By Mans Animal Doctors Just Like You Was And I Too Did Not Like The Idea Of These Medicines.
She Was Diagnosed With OesteoArthritis At Age Of 8years And Well As You Saw She Did Not Go To The Forever Sleep Til She Be Grand Age Of 19 years So 11Years She Be Having This Itinerantchild.
So What I Did In Truth Was Really Treat Her Sane As We/Us Humans Would Meaning To Me The First Things Were Small Changes To Her Lifestyle Cos As You May Know Already That Staffis Are High Energy Bundles Of Fun ..Very High Stamina And Strength And Very Playful And Active And Have Very High Pain Levels ..Etc Etc .So This Bone Sickness She Had Has "Triggers" And Can Be Easily Triggered And Made Angry Which Then Makes Them Become Sore And Hurt With Pain And Swellings In There Bones Sadly ..So The Key Is To Try To Stop/Control/Avoid Etc "Triggers" For Her So Like I Said That Means Her Lifestyle Etc Etc But Yes Sadly As She Got More Years Pass Sometimes There No Trigger It Would Happen Out The Blue So Then Its Making Her Comfortable Easing Pain.
So First Things I Did To Lifestyle Was
Make Shorter Time Her Walks And Rather Than Either One Long Walk A Day As She On The Go Anyway When Not Walking Her I Half The Time And Rest Her After And Then Later That Day/Eve I Walked Her Shorter Walk Again And Rested Her...And No Throw Balls As Much Either Etc I Made Walks More Calmer For Her Not So Hypo. Secondly ..I Made Her Bed More Puffy And A Lot Thicker Padding So Softer On Her Legs And Body Etc...Simple Little Things Like That And Got Childrens Padded Cover Hot Water Bottles And Would Put Them Under Her Padded Bed Blankets On Days When She Was A Bit Off So Heat Rise Up From Below Her Rather Than Cover Her In Blankets What Made Her Too Hot And Aggetated Vod She Then Would Scrape At Top Blankets Causing Her Legs More Aches So Its Best To Heat From Below Rather Than Above As Heat Rises Slowly Into Her Bones And Joints More Comfortable For Her .
Then Came Food/Natural Medicine Help.. I Gave Her More Fish As Oily Fish Helps Joints And Foods And Also Added Organic Coconut Oil Into Her Food Which She Sooo Loved In Fact Im Sure She Was Gonna Turn Into A Coconut Where She Loved It Sooo Much HEHEHE In Fact I Would Say She Had Foods That Humans Who Have This Would Eat That Helps . All Her Food I Cooked Fresh Which I Have Always Done Anyway ..Cos I No Like Any Tinned Or Even Dry Dogs Food ..She Simply Eat What We Eat Well What My Children Eat Cos I Am Veggie..HAHAHA.
Now The Natural Medicines To Help Her Bones Besides More Oily Fish And Coconut Oil I Give Her Some Mentioned Was I Give Her Twice A Day Waking And Bedtime Milk With Tumeric In Everyday Rather Than Sprinkle It In Her Food ..I Would Make A Mug Of Fresh Ginger Tea..And Leave To Cool And Over The Day In Her Food I Would Add Bits Of The Cool Tea And Mix It In As That Good For Helping To Keep Her Joints And Bones Inflaming.
As For Her Pain Relief Well I Gave Her What We Our People Use For Pain ..For We Do Not Use Your Drugs Of Mans World So For Me And My People We Use "Wild Opium Lettace" ...Yep It Is Natures Natural Pain Relief And Given That Name By Mans People Because "Its A Sedative And Pain Reliever Like "Opium" But WITHOUT Opium Side Effects HAHAHA.
We Either Get The Dried Stem And Leafs And Steep Them In Hot Water And Drink As A Pain Relieving Tea Or We Boil Them In Water And Add Either Honey Or Sugar Until Thickish Sort Of Syrup And Take Like Say A Cough Medicine.. But My Problem I Had Was I Did Not Know If It Would Be Poison For Her Yes Even Though She Ate Grass And Would Sneaky Whip A Few Flower Heads Or Leafs At My Plants In My Garden I Was Not Sure So I Asked And To Be Honest Some Animal Doctors Say Yes Some Say No Worst Case It Would Make Her Sick And So I Asked My Native Family Who Said Only Very Teenie Amount Of The Tea Like Half A Teaspoon Sprinkle On A Bit Of Food So I Did And Yes She Was Fine And Not Sick And That Was Her Pain Medicine And As She Got Older I Increased To One Full Teaspoon Twice A Day When She Needed It.
But Itinerant I Do Not Know 100% How Your Beautiful Cockney Would Be And Would Not Want To Make Him Sick So Maybe You Could Ask Your Animal Doctor But Be Aware Many Not Into Natural Pain Relief Cos Of Drug Company Etc So Maybe Search And Find On Airwaves/Internet For A Approved Natural Animal Herbal Medicine Animal Place And Ask Them As That Decision Has To Be Made By You Because Yes My Beautiful Staffi Was Fine And Ok And Kept Her Pain Free And Comfortable On Bad Days But I Dont Know How Your Beautiful Cockney Would Be So Ask The Animal Natural Medicine Peeps About Wild Opium Lettace In Its Tea Form But Only A Very Very Small Amount If Would Be Okay For Beautiful Cockney ..Ps Chamomile Is Good As Well For There Bones And Joints And Helps Them A Lot But As Said "The Wild Opium Lettuce" Is The Swelling Aching Pain Relief.
I Hope This Helps Both You And Cockney In Some Way As I Can Only Truly Tell You About Me And My Beautiful Staffi Princess Journey That She Went Through With Me At Her Side Helping Her To Be Happy Comfortable And Pain Free For Another 11years After I Was Told About Her Osteo Arthritis .
My Love And Healing Mahoosive (((Hugggs))) To Both You And Beautiful Cockney xx

Google Tumeric Golden Paste.. I have heard good things. Also google glucosamine and get the right dose. Human Glucosamine from health food shop will suffice. Another is youmove but might be on the more pharma side of things.
I used Glucosamine on my other dog before Nellie and she went from stiff aged to puppy like in a day!! But you have to get the dosage right..
Take care with mixing anything with peanut butter. Check labels for ingredients and avoid if it contains Xylitol!! Lethal for dogs !!

I'm giving our elderly (15yo)terrier cod liver oil for his joints. He recently had a limp and was prescribed Metacam, a common veterinary pain relief and anti inflammatory. There wasn't time period for the prescription, so after two weeks I stopped giving it to him. I know it's hard on the kidneys (which are fine) so I want to keep them that way! By the way, I was always told ibuprofen is very bad for dogs, yet others say they have given it with no side effects.

Lots of things humans eat have xylitol not just peanut butter, you should be checking everything they have access to but ive only ever made my own or bought 100% peanut butter. Its really good for getting belligerent pets to take tablets they dont like. I dont much care for stuff prescribed for dogs by vets for arthritis.Ibuprofen isnt good for anyone it causes gut inflammation and similar warnings for pet use and metacam has never done anything for my dogs at all. I dont like using cod liver oil because it can drop cholesterol levels and joint lubricants, I know when i took regularly it used to give me awful joint pains so i stopped taking it.I think glucosamine is probably about the best but Turmeric is a known anti inflammatory and has other beneficial properties so id definitely give that a go.

Actually something just came to me. We have been giving the old girl (who has multiple health issues) a Holland and Barrett glucosamine supplement for a week. We were going out yesterday, and I was walking her to the van. She walked past it, and wanted to go in the woods! So we had a little trundle about, then went back to the van. She hasn't done that for months.

Our little mate Oliver has now gone to doggie heaven. The last two years of his life his pain killers for arthritic hips was costing my step daughter £70 a week. I wanted to get his pain killers bent on a prescription for me, saying I had back pain but my step daughter works for the NHS and wouldn't have anything to do with it.
