After an 8yr old is killed on the hard- shoulder how many peeps on here use the hard-shoulder as a motorway 'rat-run' when permitted and do you trust it.
I for one don't trust it !!! IMHO it should only be used for broken down vehicles, maybe a throwback to days when I drove old motors but if it's used as a 70mph road just where are you supposed to go for safety when you break down. The areas that they supply are too far in between and if you have a 'flat' you're not going to get there anyway. /

Nope, I don't like the idea either. Modern vehicles break down too. Limp home mode anybody?

Nor me,I think its a terrible idea especially now motorways are so horrendously busy almost all the time..disaster waiting to happen.

It makes sense to use the hard shoulder from time to time to help ease congestion or when there is road works, but I think a 40mph limit should be used on it at such times. I would say 30 but people need to get their speed up if they are going to move into the faster lanes. If 40 was respected that would give people plenty of time to slow and stop if there was a broken down vehicle.

When motorways were first designed it was decided that a lane was needed to be used in emergency breakdown situations. What has changed since then, apart from the powers that be deciding they would find it cheaper to change the fuckin rules than to actually give a shit about the people who put them in power to start with! While ever motorways exist, a hard shoulder or emergency lane will be very much needed and to even consider using it for any other purpose is reckless at best. Far as I remember, it used to be a major crime driving on them, now it seems cos the gods have spoken its now OK and has no danger attached to the practice! Stop cutting corners with peoples lives! If there aren't enough fuckin lanes, build some more!

Exactly,it was deemed an essential safety margin for motorways,a decision taken when motorways were far less busy and average speed much lower. Now theyre 'not essential' and can be utilised to increase peak flow despite massive traffic volumes and vastly higher average speeds.
Because constructing additional lanes to take the extra traffic which they should have done years ago will cost billions.Meanwhile its ok to spend 200 billion on Trident.
What they dont mention is that most hard shoulders arent constructed to the same standard as main carriageways as theyre not designed to carry regular traffic. Drivers run into the back of broken down vehicles on the hard shoulder already. All this is likely to do is introduce a dangerous confusion over the purpose of hard shoulders and when to use them and increase accidents.
But whats a few accidents when you can save billions....that you can give away in corporate subsidies to your friends instead.
