Gout

I get attacks of gout, it's flipping painful. After spending winter and most of spring, unable to use my right hand due to arthritic pain, it has finally gone.
Now I have a gout attack in the joint of the thumb on my left hand, making that hand nearly impossible to use. And my usual springtime painful feet are back.
I'm not looking for advice, or even sympathy; i just feel like a good whinge.

Sorry to hear Maggie, I get it too and you can't describe the pain. Thought I might have broken something in my foot a couple of weeks back when I slipped getting out of my horsebox. Niggled that day, walked the dogs no problem, niggled the following morning but in the afternoon I was suddenly in agony. Took the little magic tabs, cochene, and it eased after 24hrs and went after a couple of more days. I keep a large dose of the pills in just in case. I've had gout on and off for a few years and usually it's 0200hrs and a big toe. If I eat oily fish I sometimes pop a tab just in case as that tends to trigger it.

Oh gout, that cursed pain, I suffered for years with it in my big toe. When the doctor asked how bad the pain was, I said that I would happily take my toe off with the chainsaw, he did say , “ please don’t do that “ I tried all sorts of things, diets without fish, cheese , beer, etc, food diaries, anything I could think of, old wives tales, new wife’s tales, anything to shift that miserable condition , nothing was working. I don’t know if you have to take any medicines for blood pressure problems, but if you do, check them Maggie, because it turns out that the meds I was on, could have a side effect of gout. Two bloody years I was putting up with that, and towards the end I was getting the symptoms at least once a month. So back to the Docs, he looked in his big book of magic medicines and said, “ yes you’re right, they do cause gout “. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at finally getting an answer, a change of brand to another, and you know, ( fingers crossed ) I have never had another attack since.

Sour cream and coffee are also meant to be beneficial for gout.

Some helpful advice here, The UK Gout SocietyDiet factsheet pdf on goutYou should also check (get checked) that you dont have Pseudo Gout which is very similar to gout but caused by calcium pyrophoshate dihydrate chrystals forming in the joints rather than uric acid chrystals with gout but causes the same painful flare ups. Also known as CPPD ( calcium pyro phophate deposition) disease and differs to Chondrocalcinosis associated with arthritis.
