Are there any employed carers/PAs on here?my employer has said she wants go go to the cinema to see a film im not bothered about, its my job to take her..so do i pay for my own ticket?cant leave here their alone.i took her to meet a friend for a meal the other day,i wasnt invited to stay.as she was feeling well enough after she said shall we go for a coffee,i wasnt fussed, but ended up paying for my own!is this the norm?not worried too much about the coffee as long as its not too regular, but thought id see what others experienced before i protest about the cinema xx

I wouldn't pay for my own ticket, as it's work. It may be worth checking with the cinema as well, as carers often go free if the are accompanying a disabled client/friend. I look after my sister, and as her carer I have often accompanied her to the theatre and not hgad to pay. Tickets have generally been bought over the phone, and had to take some proof of sister's disabled status when picking up, but it's very easy.

She should be paying your out of pocket expenses if youre accompanying her anywhere.Seems shes got it in her head shes paying you so she shouldnt have to pay for your coffee etc as well. Can you not suggest she takes a friend with her to the cinema and youll take them and bring them back later. You really need to get expenses agreed though or youll just end up paying out all the while for things you dont want and causing friction somewhere along the line.

Sounds like you're gonna end up spending all the money you earn doing things with your charge that you don't want to do. What's the point of doing that job? 😕

Yup!think it needs a word..cant leave her, only with a friend that knows her really well as she has very complex needs, and as her condition is very isolating they are few and far,so its me,or mum,but thats why im there to free up mum.but they are well off so not like they cant afford it..xx

Im afraid attending the cinema, functions etc and things you dont want to attend are an occupational hazard of the PA role. However just because youre there doesnt mean you should pay to be there yourself.A chauffeur doesn't pay for the car and the petrol. Get it agreed and if necessary in writing or witnessed so everyone knows where they stand.

Are you employed directly by your 'charge' or through an agency? If it's directly, you need to pluck up the courage to bring up the subject. If you worked in an office, and the manager invited you to the cinema, you wouldn't expect to pay would you? If you work for an agency, bring it up with them and get them to speak to the person you are caring for.

If I'm doing something I need a hand with and someone helps me they always get fed and watered as well as paid for their time.

I think I'd be getting this sorted asap hon otherwise it could well get out of hand, and out of pocket for you!I don't believe you should be out of pocket,I mean where do you draw the line???You'd soon start feeling resentful.

Done through care for all xx
