Valentine’s Day is formally known as the feast day of St. Valentine. Saint Valentine was a priest who lived in Rome in the third century during the reign of Emperor Claudius the Second. Claudius sent a decree out banning Christianity, Valentine encouraged and aided Christians facing brutal martyrdom to continue to be faithful and endure to the end. It was even said that he performed marriage ceremonies for couples. When Valentine was found to be doing this, he was arrested by the Romans and was given an ultimatum to give up his faith and worship the Roman’s pagan gods, or be sentenced to death. Valentine continually refused to deny the faith and was condemned to be beheaded. The guard who imprisoned Valentine had a blind daughter, it is said in folklore that Valentine cured her blindness, causing the guard and his family to convert to Christianity. Prior to Valentine’s beheading he wrote a farewell letter to the cured daughter signed ‘from your Valentine.’
