Dogs love sticks , but has it ever occured to you how dangerous it is throwing one for your hound ? One of Ma's bread and butter jobs is removing bits of stick that the poor dog has accidently rammed through the top of its mouth or down its thoat when it has caught the stick on the ground running with it and its messy and totally avoidable . It happens rather a lot too This morning she removed 6 fragments of wood from a coollie x lab . She said it was like a bloody gardening project . The bits of wood were just under the neck vertebra near spinal cord and another bit in the neck muscles. It nearly kliied the dog , and the owners now have a bill off £5000.

Good God! I don't doubt this happens a lot, but we must have been lucky!

My friends collie did similar,he was always finding sticks to play with, she never threw them for him. Managed to shove a stick through the side of his neck.

Rani is banned from even chewing on sticks for the risk of swallowing splinters , though she does it on the sly .Ma's always a bit cautious/pessermistic with animals . Plenty of safe stuff to chew on .
