Hi, folks. I was a member on the old UKHippy forum years ago (under a different username), always liked it.
I am 66 years old, just a couple of years too young to have been an original hippie, and way too old to be a neo-hippie. I was heavily influenced by the original hippies, and lived among some of them on an island off the west coast of Canada for a few years. I have never lived off-grid, but I admire that stuff. I had some good friends on the island who built their own tiny house, before it was fashionable, and lived off the grid. Their only electrical devices were a cell phone and the solar panel they charged it with.
I have been vegan for many years. I tried my hand at gardening my own veggies, using stored rainwater for irrigation. However, the "garden" at the place we live in now is well on the way to reverting to forest, and I don't have the energy to rehabilitate it and start from scratch. Instead, we buy fresh local veggies from a small organic farmer.
My wife and I are retired. We have a nice house on 25 acres of forested land, in a little fishing village that has a population of maybe 200 if all the kids show up for dinner. It is pretty quiet here, especially since most people are staying home due to covid-19.
My main hobby is astronomy / astrophotography, and our skies are dark enough to make it possible. In normal times, I volunteer to do sound and light tech for a community theatre company in a larger town down in the valley. Of course, it is shut down now, and will be one of the last things to open up again when times return to normal. In the meantime, the theatre company has been podcasting radio plays, for which I have been doing the sound effects.
Regards, Kathy

Welcome to the forum@Kathyl! Nice first post, keep them coming! By the way, we have been open for nearly three years now, so what kept you? Thanks for the welcome!
I left the old site before its final initial demise, as it was clear that it was running down. I didn't hear about this site until I was doing one of those "whatever happened to...?" searches and found my way here.

Actually, UKHippy.com only finally closed a few weeks ago. It closed a while ago, reopened under a new name, closed, reopened under the original name, then as I said closed for the last time last month. Welcome again!

Wishing you a warm welcome Kathyl and welcome back to the united states of Hippydom :-)
I have never been any further north of california when I have been stateside but am looking forward to have a good tour one day of both Canada and Alaska as I believe that for a lover of nature that they are a must to see :-)
Would love it if you could share some of your stories of the natural side of your country and even share some photo's with us. I live in France and have got plenty of beauty around me here and often say in stunning locations that this is like a slice of canada !! Yet I have never been :-)
Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Love and light

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone! It looks like a friendly group. More about me: I spent most of my career in IT, before retiring several years ago. I lived in a big city and went hiking or skiing in the mountains on weekends. Before that, I was a pilot in the RCAF, until I realized that being a soldier was not right livelihood. (The flying sure was fun, though!) I do have a bona fide connection to the U.K.: I was born in Northern Ireland. Which makes me a British subject and a citizen or Ireland, as well as of Canada.
