Helping an old gal down at the Shed cut up and sand down some wood to make herself a sewing box. At almost 80, she has decided she would like to learn basic carpentry, having never had the chance at school. She be doing well!

I need to do lots of bits around the house but I’m a total novice!

Hi Dottie, Welcome to the forum. One of the best woodwork books we have in the Community Shed library to lend out to learners is called 'Woodwork Step by Step'. It is a Dorling Kindersley book, well-illustrated and simple instructions, and often obtainable quite cheaply s/h from places like 'World of Books' see: www.wob.com/en-gb/books/julian-cassell/woodwork-step-by-step/9781409350989Not quite like direct tuition, but gives you a good idea of how to start, make simple cuts and joints, and even tells you about some woodwork machines you would encounter if you went to classes. This is the book our lady started with. She liked it so much she now has a copy of her own!
