Just to put my Boring Bernie hat on for a minute. In Britain we have the January sales, originally the idea was the shops then cleared out all the Christmas stock that hadn't sold.
In America they did it the other way round, Black Friday was the day they cleared the shelves of all the slow moving stock to make way for the Christmas stock they were getting in.
I believe the idea and the name started at Macy's in New York but the idea spread pretty quickly over there. Now we have it over here too, we seem to import the worst things from America. Halloween, Christmas decorations on the outside of the house, Rubbish TV, gang culture, rap music etc
