We have a packed earth track that rises.Getting bogged down lately.Whats the most economical surface to lay down and how deep to drain well and stay put under traction.Hardcore is too rough on road tyres. No time or money to dig out and do extensive drainage.

road chippings, sometimes known as mot, drainage depends on your sub soil

Whatever's cheapest at your nearest quarry,40mm scalpings are my choice.

Yes,road planings/chippings/scalpings are cheapest option to surface the track. You do really need to improve the drainage by ditching one or both sides. If you dont drain the track the surface material will just get buried over time.

I know you don't want to use hardcore, but it works well if you pound it down and cover with finer stuff. I tried to fill some potholes many times with finer stone, and it always got pushed out of the hole when wet. Some land will never be solid, a bloke I work with has been throwing concrete blocks into his track for 20 years and they're still sinking. He reckons there are many tons of them in there now.

Whatever you use the topsoil has got to come out first, down to clay or at least subsoil. If you don't dig it out first it will eventually come back thru whatever you use & fuck your track up.

Thanks for all ideas. This is the first year we have had problems with it.Cant really dig as criss crossed by very big tree roots close to surface. The track sits well raised on both sides except at the top so does drain off and dry a bit if unused.Never heard of scalpings.will try a sack.

if they are resurfacing a road near you, you can sometimes get them for nowt else they have to pay to tip them , 6-10 pound a ton delivered is average sort of price, 20 ton minimum

You need to talk to the local tree surgeons and get them to dump the waste from their chipper on your drive if they just want to get rid of it.

I don't support chippers that use fuel, make loadsa noise and leave a pile of useless chips.I support brash piles and in any case, there is disease risk of pests, fungal spores etc from other trees getting imported. Also chipped wood is like a sponge and Id be left spinning in a hole of mud and woodchips with no traction.Thank you though Bernie for taking the time to suggest something.I will end up in a four wheel drive thing in the end with knobbly tires. My rural townie car is getting trashed and looks like a mud pile.

Almost all local authorities and rural parks use wood chips for mulching to subdue weed growth and for consolidating footpaths and muddy areas. Ive used hundreds of tons of it for that purpose. Youd be better off using road planings in your case though as its a long term 'cheap' solution. Usually around 60 to 80 squid for a 20 ton load.
