NC the retailers have conned people in thinking that's the best, most hygienic way to sell food. They then say it's what the customer wants. Leave it at the till, and they might get the message! As for the bags, again we were told it's the most hygienic way to transport shopping. Use it and throw it away, get a nice clean one next time. Now here we are, up to our eyes in plastic waste. Be careful what you wish for (ppush at us) big supermarkets!

Can't understand why a perfect glass jar needs to be smashed to pieces, then melted & remade as another glass jar. I wash all my glass jars & lids in the dishwasher & they come out like new. No reason why they couldn't be reused. If every company used similar jars they could all be recycled, half the problem is when companies have their own special shaped glassware. Cigarettes are now all sold in identical packaging, why can't the same rules be applied to glass jars? Problem is the manufacturers don't care about anything other than "branding" & profit. Surely reusable jars would be cheaper than new every time. They're good enough for my homemade pickles, why not for the big names too?....

Its probably actually cheaper to melt and recycle glass than sort it into sizes and shapes, grade it,sterilise it and send it back to the manufacturers. I dont really care how they do it long as its recycled and it doesnt end up on landfill.

Be careful what you wish for (ppush at us) big supermarkets! Its never been about hygiene though, its always been about convenience and conning consumers into the idea theyre saving time and money buying things that are already prepared in glitsy packs ready to use...which is shite anyway as it always says on the packs 'wash before use'. Same with carrier bags, everyone took their iwn shopping bag but supermarkets said 'no dont bother we'll supply you with a bag so its more convenient and you dont need to think for yourselves no more.. Trust us we have your best interests at heart' cobblers. Its all about added value.. creating added value to something tgsts in its raw form is worth peanuts. Consumers have gone along with it and largely they dont think for themselves. You complain they have a million and one excuses for why its better this way. Theyre crafty about the way they present options...for instance a family apple pie for 2.80 comes in a plain box in the dairy cabinet. A family apple pie off the adjoing bakery shelf comes in a plastic box and costs a pound Logically most people will choose the one pound pies over the more expensive one and the mountain of plastic waste grows ever bigger. And,like the stupidity of removing skins off oranges and bananas and sticking them in plastic boxes The trouble is the brain dead pointy shoes nutters who come up with these marketing ideas, have a totally devastating impact on the way customers buy products and thus badly affect the environment.I mean, what bunch of prats in an organisation can sit together designing this concept of marketing a product and not one of them in the decision making chain thinks 'hang on a bit, isnt this just a bit fucking stupid? ' Only way you influence how they operate is by buying selectively and not buying the overpackaged glitsy products and writing to their head offices and bringing it to attention of eco lobby organisations over and over.

If it hasn't got a reduced lable on it, mostly I don't buy it That said, it doesn't mean I don't notice the stupid amounts of packaging.

If we all pulled all the excess packaging off at the checkout and left it piled there theyd soon do something about it.

That happens a lot in Europe, in Germany there's bins at the checkouts.

Wouldnt it be better if they just put the products in simple paper bags? (like they used to 40 years ago.)
But companies are making nice profits from glitzy packaging for manufacturers and retailers.

Actually, they do. Look on the shelves for the cheapo bottom of the range own brands. Anything from biscuits to cheese in simple bags and boxes. That says to me the packaging is the largest part of the cost of production!

Other thing is years ago all the paper & cardboard packaging was saved along with newspapers & used to light the fire. Now fires are banned & everybody is on gas etc so the only place for rubbish is in the bin. Everything at our house got burned & most of the cinders were used to mend the paths in the garden, which was all used to grow food in! The world is fucked now & this country seems to be more fucked than most....

Ha ha ha I do the same valdez! Have to say though I haven't noticed less carrier bags being bought. EVERY time I go into a supermarket I see several people buying carrier bags. They can't all be waiting for me to come in to buy a bag! I see them blowing across car parks every time I am there. Nothing seems to have changed in real life.
