Shame that people need to be offered cash incentives before they will give a fuck about the planet, but great if it works.....

When we were in London, I used to see an old guy wandering about, carrying a massive blue Ikea bag. He would pick up a discarded can, crush it, and put it in the bag. I assume he would sell them for scrap, as I can't imagine anybody doing this just to save the planet! I have to say, I haven't seen the good side of the carrier bag charge. I still see bags blowing about, and in the rubbish. Only last week I got four brand new, unused bags for life from a shopping trolley.

That's because people were taking fistfuls when they were free. Me included, but I used all of them! Ok so there are less bought and used for shopping, but it doesn't seem to have reduced litter. I don't walk about and thin "wow there no more carrier bags blowing about any more".

Fuckin annoys me, you buy a load of shopping costing pounds & pounds, then the bastards say " 30p for the bags to carry it all home in! Look at us doing wonders for plastic waste!" then you look at your shopping & every item is wrapped in a plastic package that you neither want or need! If you buy 6 apples why do you need a fuckin plastic bag? Or a lb of taters, why have a plastic bag for them? A paper bag would be just as good for you. The big stores & manufacturers are only interested in plastic saving if it doesn't inconvenience them & they can charge it to some other fuckin person ie you & me.

Have had to use re-useable large shopping bags here in France for a lot of years now and support the idea greatly. It is a question of habit ! The first time that I went to a supermarket in the uk after years in France and was walking around the shop putting my shopping into my big bag to be emptied out at the check out,I got lots of strange looks from various shoppers and got accosted by the security guy !!
It is just what you get used to and certainly the big tougher bags are a much better idea for the planet.
As for deposits on bottles and cans, its nice to know that the kids of today can also pinch them from the back of the local shops and get the deposit back from the shopper owner. Naughty but nice :-)

End of the day the manufacturers and retailers are to blame because its them that have pushed products into containers and packaging thats not being recycled. Years ago everything went in glass / jars bottles that could easily be recycled or into card and paper containers that rotted or got burned.
Really pisses me off that everything you buy these days comes in a massively extravagant plastic display box or bag, especially fresh food items that because of the oversized packs wont fit in the fridge. Tomatoes salad items, mushrooms and fruit etc used to be in paper bags or waxed cardboard punnets. Now theyre in a massive fancy plastic box - Why? Theres no earthly reason why it needs to be in a plastic display box.
If retailers sold more stuff loose with appropriate paper bags, or card punnets of fruit people would still buy the stuff.
Why does a pack of socks or underwear need to be in a fancy polythene display bag with pop studs and pretty edging and a built in hanger AND a glossy photo card insert.?
Everything you buy is in a sodding plastic blister pack or stuffed with tons of polystyrene.
Not all drinks need to go in plastic bottles, they can go in cardboard box tetrapak containers like some are already.
Manufacturers and retailers need to take responsibility for their marketing and packaging of products that is very bad for the environment, equally as much as consumers need to make choices about what they buy and how they recycle it.
So far manufacturers and retailers have taken the attitude that waste and recycling is entirely a consumer problem nothing to do with them and always come out with the threat that to change their policies would make products much much dearer for consumers- which we know is total bollox.
Its about time the Government started cracking the whip and made these corporates change because they wont do it themselves.

Said exactly how it is Cris,I could not agree more.
A concientious consumer is very important for the planets health, but a concientious company can surely make much more difference especially if it is a large company.
It is up to us all to work together to help reduce the waste comoing from shops and for those of you who are not happy with what you get from your supermarket with regard to excess packaging,do not just whinge about it to your friends, but tell the shop manager what your thoughts are or even threaten to boycott their store until they make a change that respects the planet. Most will not give a damn about the planet, but will consider change if they will see that it helps their profit margin.
Together we can make a difference :-)

The bottle of “ RED” that I treated myself to today was made of glass, I can recycle that 👍

Also, years ago people went shopping, its not a new thing and we had the same products to buy but everything was wrapped in paper or in paper bsgs or paper sacks or waxed paper or card boxes. No plastic or polythene,we still bought it all.
We had proper shopping bags made of linen or wicker that you used till the handle ripped off or the bottom fell out after several years. We didnt have to have a brand new plastic bag every time we went shopping, supermarkets pushed that idea on us.
In my opinion all plastic shopping bags should be banned as people still throw the bag-for-life bags away even if the number of them has declined. Whats wrong with hemp or cotton shopping bags? They last much longer and will degrade if dumped or can be recycled too.
Somewhere along the line we lost our minds and got taken in by the idea we need to buy things in pretty fancy plastic display boxes.
If we dont collectively see through this nonsense we've been fed by manufacturers and retailers we are doomed.

Glass is the most important of all the materials to recycle as it takes far more energy to remake. I remember reading quite a few years ago that the power saved by recycling just one bottle can run a tv for an evening. If I was to add up all the bottles and shards of glass that I have recuperated from the countryside over the year to put into recycle bins,I reckon that I could supply a village with power for their tv's for a year with the power saved.
Whatever efforts you make to help our beautiful planet - well done you xx
