www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48185806Every adult in the UK should receive a weekly basic income of £48, according to the recommendations in a new report. £48?? I thought UBI was supposed to replace benefits and other state payments like Tax Credits. What would be the point of such a small payment?

Annoying thing is these levels of "minimum required income" are set by people who will happily go & spend 200quid on a weekday lunch!

This stuff comes from some weird thinktank I believe? Where does free money come from?

Not really all free money tho is it? I worked all my life & regularly saw 150-250 a week stoppages. When I became a single parent I made a claim in order to support my boy. I still haven't claimed back what I put in....

I think I'd rather see more basic things like plenty of affordable homes or relaxing planning laws so that people can live in caravans or yurts or whatever in someone's garden or on their driveway. Be better to aim to get people's living expenses down by £48 a week by helping out with solar panels or subsidised travel or some other way that means people aren't forced to spend a big chunk of their incomes on basics like heating or getting from a to b. I like the idea of a basic income but it never seems to actually explain how it works for people who can't work and whether it would be paid in addition to existing benefits or if it would be taken off. I like details! Lol, never seem to have them

That's waaaaay too sensible GIST. As far as I understand how UI has been run in other countries, the amount offered is supposed to replace benefits and tax allowances. It's automatic, no means testing or application. It's supposed to be paid for by not running those systems. Where the hell they got £48 to replace all the other state money I have no idea.

I know, that's what doesn't make sense to me, there's parts of the country where rent alone would be a grand a month. Disability benefits help with the additional cost of disability; sometimes that involves a mobility element as well so the amounts vary depending on your problems - it's all that sort of thing that no-one explains.
