The UK is just one country, it's more important for the world in general if companies can locate where necessary to make the best products possible.

That's the one thing neither the workers or the government understand. Workers are considering a strike (er that's going to work!) and the government might offer incentives, but they will go anyway. Look what happened to Ford's Southampton plant. Big business looks after one thing. Big business.

And the rich Brits and politicians look after themselves, they dont give a shit about the workers in Swindon or Sunderland or anywhere else.. Thats why weve no car industry- or any other major manufacturing industry- of our own...unlike other European countries because they sold us all out.

I was playing devil's advocate a little bit in my last post and I will here as well, british brands aren't always the best and there's no reason to only buy from your own country

Agreed, but it would be nice to have that option. This country has been systematically raped of any industry that was capable of turning a profit, & left without any means of supporting itself. Anyone who tries to set up anything to earn money is taxed so heavily that they struggle to stay buoyant. The governing parties here have sold us out for their own gain, & relied on the fact that the whole of Europe recognizes that "British Is Best" otherwise why were they all so desperate to buy in & own our companies?....

We do (or did?) have a good reputation internationally, but our cost of living means wages have to match.
This took away any profit margin for international investors. They saw cheaper wages and higher profits elsewhere, so buying a company and moving the production to cheaper countries with cheaper labour was their answer. People paying rent or a mortgage, and feeding themselves or children, in this country, can't live on £50 a week.

Yeah but a lot of the outsourcing seems to be the world balancing up somewhat. China has had millions come out of poverty recently along with many other countries in the world equalising out more with the western world, and a lot of those production jobs are quickly becoming automated anyway which no-one can stop. There are things like steel dumping which we could protect our industries from, and probably should, but I don't think production moving abroad is always necessarily evil. There's still skilled production too which we could keep if we can keep people knowledgeable, but in areas like welding we seem to be losing this.

Oh yes, let's not forget automation! There's a thing called Re Shoring, which means the manufacturing will return to the UK, US and the EU. The problem is, the manual workers will see no benefit. All the manufacturing will be automated.
