The problem that Honda, Nissan and Toyota have had with production in the EU is that on mainland Europe the Europeans don't buy anything except their own makes. The Germans buy German, the French buy French and the Italians buy Italian.
Japanese cars have never gained the level of acceptance in Europe that they should have when you consider that they are clearly much better cars than a Citroen or a Fiat.
The Factory at Swindon has never reached anywhere near the level of production that it was expected to and neither has the Nissan plant in Sunderland.

That's how things should be people should have a bit more national pride. If you don't then you lose your industries. Look at us, used to be fuckloads of British car, bike, tractor etc makes. Our govt let in foreign vehicles whose makers undercut our own manufacturers till we went to the wall! Now there's nobody left here making any fuckin thing,& all you can buy is foreign vehicles. The French etc should be applauded for their allegiance to home market products, that's what keeps the industry alive.

Also, the various governments are obliged to buy locally made cars, that is national brands. Unfortunately our government only wants to see the price, and doesn't look at the bigger picture. Also, let's not forget Thatcher's obsession with crushing unions and workers in the 80s. That's what saw off manufacturing. The workers needed a decent wage, and those in the far East were given £5 a month if they were lucky. If you are manufacturing, it's a no brainer. Your widget costs 80p to make here, but only 3p in China. Why would you make your widgets here? It's always about money.

I remember when all our emergency services among other govt departments had to buy British, hence Bedford ambulances & Transit police vans. Then as usual our fuckin greedy government sold us out. Now they supposedly just buy what is cheapest, although I fail to see how a BMW X5 can be cheaper than the alternative motorway patrol vehicle. Most police vehicles round here now are expensive foreign vehicles & all the ambulances are eithet Mercedes or Renault. Well done govt for looking after the people that gave you your jobs!

no multi national company is going to sit about losing money waiting to see what happens, they're not going to take the chance of there being chaos at the ports and not being able to get goods in and out of the country. Even British companies are relocating abroad as it makes trading easier. Just think this is only the start, watch every big company leave one by one over the coming years.

Yes and the pound is up against the dollar again today. That's about three days in a row. Go Figure it out, The nearer we get to leaving the more the money markets are liking the pound. Project fear said the pound would crash and burn (edit - Sorry its four days in a row)

Markets always buy and short sell on disaster news and political instability, theres rich pickings in doom and gloom markets. It really doesnt matter what traders do with their money or how well stocks and shares or the pound are doing, what matters is investment in the country and where the assets are, what jobs are dependent on that investment and to which government the revenue is paid. Most of which is flooding out of the country.
Germany sells a lot of cars in the UK and a lot of Germany hating Brits buy German cars (as well as French Italian Spanish cars).Go figure that out.
