You can tell people the price of absolutely everything in pounds shillings and pence. Sadly I do without thinking automatically convert price rises to shillings or what to me is proper money. What you could buy back then for a bob compared to what 5 bstard p gets you now (4 Milky Ways, 2 Mars, 2 Jubilees, 48 BlackJacks or the FruitSalad, a box of Imps ect) and half a crown as a kid made you minted(20 BlackCat and change). Todays world is shite for inflation.

Tis true....i used buy a ton of liqourice for threepence.A sixpence bought my sweets for the week. Lol I can remember my dad grumbling at paying 10p ( 2 shillings) for a gallon of 4* petrol.
I saw a fresh sourdough loaf on a website yesterday 3.80 😱 and thought then thats 76 shillings...used to get a family loaf for a shilling or a bag of big buns for sixpence.
We had the best days I think.
Nothing is about true value anymore its simply about how much they can screw out of you before you say no and walk away.

Friends keep asking if youve made a will. A lot of the mates I used to hang out with when we were in our 20s are dead. I've got another funeral to go to next week in Worthing

I remember shillings, but don't convert pence into them. A shilling is our present day 5p but in old money it was 12 pennies. Two sixpences or 4 threepenny bits to a shilling. Half a crown was two and six (two shillings and sixpence Florin was two shillings (10p) 24 pennies 240 pennies to a pound. You got lots for your money till decimalisation..then the daylight robbery started.

I suppose when you get to 50+ its inevitable folks you know start popping off more often but still no consolation.

Prices went up, but it was hidden by the conversion from the Franc or whatever.

Being a biker a lot of them went young in road accidents, many not their fault. Then it quietened down for a few years as we got more sensible. Not one of my circle died from drugs, we were not into drugs despite living in London in the 70s drugs were considered to be for 'them' not 'us' Now its "lifestyle" cancers, old excesses catching up

Two of my friends( not school mates) died biking and obviously some in the forces but first of my school friends of same age died of cancer last year. I dont think on it too much..non of us are getting out of here alive. In a 100 years pretty well everyone of 7 billion people alive today will be dead.

Us kids buying penny sweets spotted the great decimalisation swindle straight off. From my friends moterbikes were the biggest killer , they were dropping like flys in the early 80s , it was so bad in the area I lived Thames TV made a documentry. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZPXMaRN4m8Getting old sucks , but the other option is worse. TBH I have been pleasantly suprised how many of my friends are still alive and healthy bearing in mind the life style we lived.

Bungo if you mean being nomadic or even just alternative (unemployed?), it's a far healthier way of life than sat on your backside most of your life!

You're missing out halfpennies, 24 to the bob and crowns (now 25p) which are still legal tender although you'd most likely save them. Also the brown 10 bob note, that was really something to have as a kid and at that time I cannot remember any note in my home higher than a green quid.
I can vaguely remember the hoohar from shopkeepers when I first used a £20 and folks showing them to others.
Also remember the robbing twunts in shops rounding everything up on decimalisation then adding some too.

when you realise with a jolt that your youth things are now referred to as vintage and you really wish you had actually gone for that requested quickie behind the bike shed with that very bad lad from youth club you fancied when you still had stuff to strut about. My youth era is back in fashion! Makes me feel old. Everyone is wearing 90's You think the 90s is old?
