NomadCris that's typical. It's been a good day to bury bad news since March 23 The bad news is it wont be Tory MPs eating chlorinated chicken and hormone filled beef and pork from the US,it will be us and we wont know because the US is insisting on no country of origin labelling on food. Get that good cheap garbage down your neck and be grateful. Whats wrong with chlorinated chicken? In general American food standards are much higher than EU standards and unlike the EU the regulations are very strictly enforced

Lol..yes of course they are. Its widely documented on that US farm meat production animal welfare and rearing conditions are appalling, hormones are allowed, organic food producers are persecuted and food labelling to tell you how its produced, whats in it and where it comes from is being outlawed.
If you want to eat US food go right ahead. My US friends have warned me but have no choice , I do.

If they think black lives matter stay at home and protect them

a statue of a slave trader has been pulled off its pedestal in Bristol and i can see the thinking behind this,i was wondering why it was put up in first place Its a grey area, he didn't actually trade slaves as far as we know but he owned a big fleet of trading ships, some of which transported slaves as part of his operation. His main business was transporting and selling British made goods to the colonies in Africa and US/Canada. on the return he brought goods from the colonies, and wine back into the port of Bristol. He made a vast fortune and spent a lot of it on charities for the poor in Bristol, he build alms houses for the poor, schools etc. He did a lot of good work but one aspect of his life now comes to dominate all the discussion about him.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jun/08/who-was-edward-colston-and-why-was-his-bristol-statue-toppled-slave-trader-black-lives-matter-protestsAlthough Colston was born in the city in 1636, he never lived there as an adult. All his slave-trading was conducted out of the City of London In 1680 he joined the Royal African Company (RAC) company that had a monopoly on the west African slave trade. It is believed to have sold about 100,000 west African people in the Caribbean and the Americas between 1672 and 1689 and it was through this company that Colston made the bulk of his fortune, using profits to move into money lending. Bristol Museums has sought to explain the reason for Colston’s statue remaining the city “What we do know is that he was an active member of the governing body of the RAC, which traded in enslaved Africans, for 11 years.”

I wouldn't condone slavery, it was never the right thing to do, but I think it must be accepted as a part of our past, dark tho it was. Same as the holocaust, a lot of abhorrent things have happened but the same people were also responsible for so much good & positive things. Shame that a man who did so many good things is mainly remembered for his negative side but that is the modern way. Main thing is we have moved on from the dark times but the dark acts must be a part of out historical teachings, if only to try to ensure that they never happen again....

i see Nelsons statue has been mentioned. dont envy the peep who,s going to shimmy up that to tie a rope around his neck There's a Youtube video of an old Blue Peter clip of John Noakes? I think it was him, going up a load of tied together ladders with no safety gear or hard hat on to get to the top of Nelson's column to clean it, I think, probably 70s or maybe 80s, it's just hilarious because he literally just wanders up there in his anorak - they'd have scaffolding up now and about fifty people doing health and safety checks I'd have thought. Not relevant to anything that's going on now but your comment about who'd have to get up there made me think of it x
