Wilko took the place left by Woolies but they made the same mistake by basing themselves on the high St. Often high streets are in rapid decline. The more shops that close the less reason people have to go there.

Wilko is still a profitable viable business,it ran into cash flow problems as most high street businesses do. Prospective buyers have just waited for it to go into administration so they can cherry pick the lucrative assets and dump the rest along with most of the staff. The losers will be wilko owners, the staff and the landlords who rent property to Wilko and ultimately the council's who will lose business rates.
High street stores arent unpopular, large portion of people still prefer shopping in shops to shopping on line.
Whats killed the high street stores more than the trend to online shopping is the greed of successive governments and local authorities using small businesses as a cashcow to relentlessly milk, plus the unbridled greed of property landlords increasing rent year on year ignoring tenents struggling and very variable circumstances. The two aspects cripple small businesses and has done for decades. Retail wages arent the cause, theyve been low verging on slave labour for decades too.
Businesses in most areas are in for a rude awakening soon with the government's new Freeports, Special Economic Zones and Charter Cities. There wont be any profit in running businesses outside of Freeports and Special Economic Zones. City centres and most likely many retail parks will close down and retailers will move to those zones. No large retailer, corporate or business is going to stay trading where they are if they can move to a Freeport or SEZ where they pay no tax and dont have to comply with national laws and regulations.
Good luck to small businesses adapting to all that chaos on top of the Brexit disaster. Disaster Capitalism at its finest. A wrecking ball to UK SMEs and the high street...just as retail parks have been.Alongside bulldozing vast tracts of city and town centres for pointless wasteful grandiose puff-piece architectural projects and ramping up car parking charges that make it unviable to shop in a city or town and ignoring any provision for other modes of transport or reliable public transport.
And people wonder why UK towns and cities are dead, shops and pubs close and high streets are taken over by boarded up units, charity shops and estate agents.
We need to get rid of the political snake-oil salesmen and the cosy relationship between politicians and property developers.
I genuinely feel sorry for Wilko owners, ive not been in one of their stores very often but it was always humming and a good experience and quality merchandise unlike places like Poundland.
Another UK household name that will be picked apart by the predatory asset stripping vultures in hedge funds.

Chris , do have a listen. Ivor is rational ,and spells it out. In clear concise language. All historical fact and all coming to fruition now. Wish I was wrong, but I'm not.
