Irish travellers, have an innate ability to deftly tap a gate open with a vehicle bumper then lean on the horn to summon the owner. Im not aquainted with that particular finishing school . I imagine that level of charm rarely gets a favorable outcome

Its not a fence post tis a gateway post then.Everything is and needs be a good bit beefier.Being more feeble nowadays and also needing to rehang a gate and renew a post,im going to dig deep for the hanging post, the latch post is not so needy of strength. If you are regating a tip to stop theiving, they nick gates my way,I set a heavy chain in the concrete of the hanging side and loop it round the bottom bar of the gate on the hinge side.Stops it getting lifted so easy.Your place looks a good bit more civilised than my place,a leafy lane rather than a wild jungly wood. Top tip about the chain in concrete ! Thanks !

Top tip about the chain in concrete ! Thanks ! I started doing that when there was a lot of gate thieving round our way.Slows them down a bit, they may pick an easier target.Make sure you only chain in the hinge end. Old boat mooring chain is cheap from boatyards and is heavy duty and virtually bolt cutter proof. I also buy the older personal attack alarms that end up unused in charity shops. The older ones are now illegal i think as they are too loud and may damage hearing. If you fix the battery/alarm body to the inner door frame then put a cord attaching to the the pin so that when a shed door etc is opened the pin pulls out and activates the alarm that is effective and cheap.Make sure the cord attached to the pin is long enough so you can connect it through the open door before you close it from the outside. It makes a very big racket. No theif will wait around looking for the pin to disable it.The joys of rural wales.
