Call them what you will mon ami,but to me they were nednecks :-)
I got invited back to one of their cabins after they picked me up hitching through the mountains and they were very hospitable and generous but I was on my guard all the same. The bloke who was half biker half wild boar kept saying " hell boy, never had anyone from wales round these parts before " and "Shit man,its so cool to have a guy from wales here ". He aeared to be very impressed with my welshness, which was a bit weird and something had my heckles up as what he was saying was not feeling true for some reason that I could not add up.
After another 10 beers and him being quite drunk he turnes around and said ' bud,I'm going to have to level with ya,never did hear of wales before, where the fuck is it anyway ".
Even now, twenty years later when that pops into my mind I still laugh out loud at the way he said it :-)
I would like to say that they were nice people, but all in all apart from their hospitality that night I actually think that they were not nice at all,and its only because of my ability to adapt and relate that they accepted me as a friend for the evening.
I have a few stories of red neck encounters including one woman ulling a gun on me,which I will share another time. I also met some great people who radiated out kindness. If you enjoy sussing people out and being entertained by human nature then america is worth the visit.
I always thought that the sort of people that were on the Gerry springer show were made up and played by actors, but hey oh fuck they do actually exist and there are many of them !!

there is all types wherever one goes no matter what label one puts on them, I expect I could say the same some of the people I have met in the past. I dont suppose many Americans know where Wales is, they probably dont know where Devon is either!

Wherever you say you are from in the uk,99 percent will say " thats there london, right " They are majoritively pretty poor on their geography. Going back to the thread - I would say that it is the majority of the rtedneck-trailer trash call them what you will people that will of put their votes in for trump whereas the better educated and more aware will of decided to take a chance on Biden.
I have seen in France how marine le pen has made the idiots and les paysans/paysannes ( peasants which is a non derogatory term here ) stand up and believe in her because she has talked the talk that they want to hear and they are a fair percentage of the overall vote in France. I know the le pen family personally as my ex breton girlfriend was related to them and we-I had the dis-pleasure of going to their house for a family wedding. My ex hated them, but in France family is family. You dont hear me use this word often but they are cunts !! Marine is just like her father and is as dangerous but has got a head on her shoulders and plays the political game beautufully and has manipulated many people and She like trump apealed to the less intelligent side of society and won many votes as they tricked them into doing so by the style of their rhetoric. After Trums term in office I think that the average american has now realised that he is actually not mentally sound and a loose cannon. Better late than ever eh!!
I do have to say that with wales being a country or in legal terms a principality then if many people in the usa have not heard of it then it is pretty much a given thing that they have not heard of Devon !!!! I mean no offence to Devon with that comment as it is a county I know very well and love dearly :-) I was in south somerset for seven years,so getting to know the beautiful neighbouring counties was a must.

I hear what you say but politics is politics and is an emotive subject at best. I dont have much interest in European politics as such and I detest the EU with all my heart, I believed in the "common market" but not all this political crap. we spent 10 years living in Somerset in Glastonbury before we came back home to Northern Devon, no where else I'd rather be than here.

I dont think any modern American would be able to find Britain on a regular map never mind a blank one. your average American seems to be very stupid.

Were you living in glastonbury town or the surrounding area? And what years were you there ?
I was living near stoke st gregory about fifteen miles south west out on curry moor not far from north curry and this is a guess but I would say that I was there from about 92/93 to 99 ish and like many young hippies in that area sent a lot of my time up at glastonbury, though more time around the two wells and up on the trt than in town. It was an interesting place thats for sure !!
Does anyone know if the little café is still open at the base of the tor where the water runs straight down a stream through the café floor to the white well ? Lovely little place where I tripped out for many hours on both lsd and the tor energy :-)

In france they are taught in school that Wales,Ireland and Scotland are part of England !! If the teachers are saying this then you can hardly blame the people for thinking it. I guess its probably the same stateside !!

We lived in Glastonbury town on windmill hill from 1999 to 2009. I've been back once or twice a year ever since but not this year because of lock down. was getting too big, a lot and I mean A LOT of house building going on so we decided to come home to Devon.

I can understand why. Last time I went in to town to get a nice hippy top on one of my previous visits I was amazed with the changes going on around the town, especially almost everyone I heard speaking had a brummy accent !!
I sed to go up the tor with a bindhi on my forehead and meditate, play my Djembi and meet some cool and interesting people, some were exremely interseting in a tripped out sort of way !!
It was nearly always a good vibe though sat on top of the michael and mary lines :-)

Glastonbury is like that, it reinvents itself every few years, its different things to different people. I used to hang around the drop in centre in Silver Street, made many good friends there but they've all be chased out of town by the town council, none of them left they've all moved on.

I dont think any modern American would be able to find Britain on a regular map never mind a blank one. your average American seems to be very stupid. Its the way they are educated or more to the point not educated. Nothing is outward looking. Their TV channels and newspapers are all local. They don't even know what is going on in their own State much less the world. I used to think when I lived there it was because of the great distances involved but now that no longer holds water. I do believe in the conspiracy of mass stupidity. A cross between Groundhog Day and the Stepford Wives. We think of America as being its Cities. New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston etc But most of America is small rural communities where nothing ever happens from the time you are born till the time you die
