People were very quick round here to organise volunteer groups so that people could pick up and drop off various bits and pieces that people need. It's all been very lovely, there are a lot of kind people around and a lot of relatives from further away have been able to organise shopping and through the window visits for their older relatives who aren't on Facebook. Anyway, I put out an ask for someone to collect my son's meds from the pharmacy for me and the guy who did it not only picked them up and dropped them off for us, but he also bought my son an Easter Egg and left it on the doorstep for him. How nice is that? So kind, it's really lovely to know that there are some lovely people around

I interact with few people normally, and am happily amazed with how helpful and generous of spirit people are now. People are so keen to help out those who are vulnerable, I have people who I don't know but who know how things are with Julia, asking me if there's anything they can do to help; anything they can get for me when they are out.
When I take the dogs out, folk will stop and say hello, keeping the correct distance, and when they walk on will generally say, "Keep safe".
I honestly think that covid-19 might end up a good thing. While governments are using it as an excuse for even more social control - I'll be interested to see if we ever get our public spaces/right to walk in the countryside and move about back; still the ordinary person, your neighbour who you would generally walk past without even nodding perhaps, is now the person who you can count on.
I do think that society is getting kinder and more gentle.

Lets face it,all the Government has done is throw money at the problem. We will get through it not because of them but inspite of them thanks to millions of people in the NHS, the supply, service, building and transport, police and military and more and an army of unseen kind hearted volunteers. Hopefully it will make people more community minded and change attitudes to consuming local produce and not stuff vulnerable to a fragile supply chain from thousands of miles away.
Maybe it might even heal some of the spite and nastiness that Brexit raked up.
Lovely gesture from your helper.

I think the situation has brought out the best in some people and the not so best in others but it has been really lovely to see how many people are happy to do lovely things for others. He wouldn't take any money for petrol either, just said he's still got his job because he delivers for Tesco so he's luckier than most and happy to help out. Really nice guy. Yes it would be nice if it brings about positive changes in society. It has shown me, definitely, that it is worth putting in the time to grow what you can, cook what you can and just generally be self sufficient as much as that's possible, even if it is only being able to make a loaf of bread that doesn't resemble a house brick

I've felt let down by a lot of folk since caring for my son as they'd not made much effort to keep in touch but quite a few contacted me when this all started to make sure we were alright and it does make a difference when people take that couple of minutes just to let you know they know you're there x

Let's hope it does, only heard a few horror stories so far which is nice, people are maybe not as bad as I started thinking they were.... Fingers crossed! One of the things I've wondered about over the years is how things have changed from communities helping each other out to the expectation being social services will do it and of course, often they don't. I know when I was a kid there were lots of informal care arrangements with mums watching each other's kids and doing shopping for the old boy up the road, the younger blokes fixing cars for the single parents and those sorts of things. Lots of favours back and forth. There seems to be more of an expectation that the authorities sort things out now and I think various regulations put an end to informal arrangements, especially with things like looking after kids. There needs to be a balance, I think, between that local authority safety net and them putting their noses in too much. Be nice if people realise they can do things without being told to a bit more now.

It is in spite of them, isn't it, and it's really highlighted how many people need to be paid better and recognised for what they do and how important it is to fund public services even if they're not needed constantly. Hopefully people will remember. Was a lovely gesture, bless him. My son knows me very well and has put the egg on a high shelf where I can't reach it lol
