When I was a lad everything went on the fire. The ashes either went in the dustbin or if they were good ashes they were used to top up the paths in the gardens round the village or fill in potholes in the lanes. All wrapping paper & chip papers went to light the fire. Glass jars were re used for homemade jams & pickles. All that went to the tip was ashes & broken glass & broken crockery, just like the Victorians did. How has everything managed to go so fucked over just the last 40 yes or so.?...🤔 Forgot about the jamjars. My folks never bought jam or marmalade as the old girl was a religious jam maker and some of the jars were years old. Nothing out of the garden was ever wasted. Best part for me was getting to lick the jampan afterwards. Same with bottles, the old man made gallons of wine and never bought any. He's been dead some 15 yrs and my lad finished off the last 5 bottles last year.

Where I live there is great deal of irrigation farm land. Some of these farmers use 12" plastic pipes made from re-cycled plastic. You can also buy black plastic storage boxes made from re-cycled plastic. Canned food can be convenient for camping or for living in a van but much of the time is an expensive way to buy food. There are exceptions such as oysters ( buy ones in water not oil) ; same for sardines and canned salmon is cheaper.

duckman I don't doubt some plastics get reused, but I bet most plastics collected for recycling just gets dumped or burned. Not necessarily in it's country of origin, most likely in the Far East or Asia.

There is nothing new about auto-recycling. It has been happening since cars became mass produced. Currently scrap metal dealers are offering $7 for dead car batteries and $50 for catalytic converters. I think I threw one out a couple of months ago when having a clean up. I found another use for empty jam jars. For left over acrylic house paint . i decant into empty jam jars. I put a put a piece of cling film on top before putting the lid on.

Why do we need a peeled orange or banana in a plastic box FFS,they already come in their own natural biodegradable package. So we can spend our precious time buying other pointless krap.
