I never use chemicals as I am poorganic . I can't afford dem chemicals if I wanted them , and it would be cheating anyway Weeds get the hoe and naughty insects get chickened/squashed/netted /discouraged etc . In fact hoeing is one of my simple pleasures . I hoe like a mother fucker when ever I can . My grandfather grew a mass of veg, salad and fruit all his life till he was 80+ and never once used chemicals. He use to say chemicals is no gardening, chemicals is for lazy people, no me,poison the earth poison youself, thats it.

Been a few simple pleasures this week including time with my mum, but the one that is making me laugh and smile is the little fire that I am lighting in an old pressure cooker down my mums garden to heat up my water.
Last visit four years back I had problems with a neighbour who did not like me lighting the fire near to his house as he thought that I would poison him in the night !! I decided that it would not be worth upsetting them again as my mum has to live next door so I searched for another option as my mum has not got any gas at the moment due to a problem so the onlmy water heating option in the house is the leccy kettle and environmentally and economically that does not work for me.
I found an old pressure cooker that she was going to bin so have placed it on a couple of stones half way down the garden and have been having my evening fire in that, with a grill over the top to put my kettle on. To begin with it was too smoky for my liking so I have put some bricks on the top and place the kettle on top of them and that pulls the fire up like a good chimney. I need to blow on the embers until the fire is nice and hot and then it burns nicely, as with no holes in the bottom of the pan it needs a bit of help.
The simple pleasure is getting back to simple camping again and having a little fire outside in the middle of a housing estate, it makes me smile :-)

Hmm!thanks might give it a go,the grill in the oven is like a furnace, and if we had an electric toaster it would blow the trip for the yard..farmers and their money saving short cuts..so in warm weather its no toast! lol x

A simple pleasure both yesterday and today that have both made me smile. The pleasures have come in the form of hearing a couple of sounds that I have not heard in over thirty years. Pleasure one was listening to the ball hitting the bat and the howzats coming from the local cricket ground just down the road from my mums and pleasure two today was hearing the ice cream van doing its rounds with the same old crap music as when I was a kid :-)
Both put a big smile on my chops :-)

I occasionally hear the chimes of an ice cream van over in the next village, but haven't heard the sound of a game of cricket for a couple of decades. It is just glorious lying in a field on a sunny day listening to the thwack of the ball, the muted clapping and gentle cheering, it is one of the most civilized sounds I know. ππ

I'm baking a pie; potato, onion and cheese. I inherited a multicooker from my sister - a slow cooker with better controls - and I'm hoping that the pastry will cook properly in it as it's maximum temperature appears to be 160Β°.
