Standing out in my woods throwing food out for the appreciative birds in the snow and icy conditions then going and breaking the ice on the nearby ponds so that the animals can drink. A simple pleasure for me knowing that my efforts will help the local fauna in the killing months :-)

Plugging in my battery booster gadget this morning when it was minus 7 and sliding a pan of hot enbers under my sump to see the van turn over nicely on the 2nd turn of the key. Who needs heater plugs :-) To be honest, I would like them :-)

Standing out in my woods throwing food out for the appreciative birds in the snow and icy conditions then going and breaking the ice on the nearby ponds so that the animals can drink. A simple pleasure for me knowing that my efforts will help the local fauna in the killing months :-) My sister used to feed the wild birds, I never did as I was afraid of them relying on me providing them with food when I couldn’t afford to do so. Guess what, I now feed the wild ones, buying food for them when I buy food for my captive ones. I also keep in touch by letter with some of her friends who miss her, it’s actually a nice feeling (most of the time).

I agree with your thoughts on not making the birds reliant on being fed hun and would never buy food for them when eating is plentiful, but when there is ice and snow around and they can not access their grain, seeds and grubs I think that the odd little feast of something to help them boast their fat content is a good thing. I leave a few piles of sunflower seeds in various parts of the forest as well as a few broken up grease balls. I have heard of cases of birds getting tangled in the grease ball nets and doing themselves damage so always remove them from the nets and place the contents elsewhere for them. I feel that these gifts will help keep them going through the hard times that a cold winter throws at them.
Its nice Maggie that you are keeping your sister's friendships alive through your good self, keeps part of your sis living on :-) No doubt it must be sad at times too ! stay strong hun and remember the good times xx

I've fed the bird three times today! They stomp up and down on the roof and follow me around the yard.

I only drink coffee in the morning, and never more than two mugs. It really is a great pleasure to sit down after my first round of chores, at the table with my coffee and look out of the window at the day.
