When I lived in America people would routinely do a monthly shop. everything was only ever bought by the case. Thats where Costco and a few other names you would not recognise came into being. Rest of the time, people in rural areas would hardly cross paths with each other.
Come the winter in Upstate New York, where I was, people would lay in food, kerosene, and even petrol for 3 or 4 months It was part of their cycle of life. Apart from Church which always seemed a disproportionate influence in their lives, they would virtually hibernate.
Even quite ordinary people would shoot a deer in the season and freeze it. Strange to me that perfectly ordinary people would think nothing of hacking apart the carcass of a fully grown deer in their back garden and transferring the bits into their house. But its what you are brought up with.

Americans are raised on the hunting and fishing thing. My friend in Oregon has Walmart and Costco close by but theres still the annual ritual to bag a couple of deer or a moose for the winter freezer and think nothing of driving 700 miles to go get them. Two chest freezers packed with veg and have hundreds of jars of preserved veg fruit fish etc they do themselves Theyve a bigger sense of independence and self sufficiency than here.
Pity we dont all have the same self sufficient drive. Everyone here- or at least the majority living on the mainland- expects everything handed them on a plate, although covid has changed some attitudes.

post war most people had larders and lots of them grew their own veg, this was the days before supermarkets, now everyone goes to the supermarket and expects stuff to be on the shelf 12 months of the year. when I was a kid we ate stuff that was in season, if it wasnt in season we didnt have it to eat, most people now wouldnt know what a season is.

Most of the papers are too. Theyre also considering harsher measures according to leaked report.

No kidding. So many people can't get a test. Now the ones that did don't get recorded. What's the point?

Do you people think we will ever know who, what ,where this covid started i had to agree with BOJO other day when he said he was pissed off with this bug Everyone likes to blame China but when they went through historical water samples of Barcelona waste water they found it in samples from as far back as March 2019.Italy also found evidence of it in Autumn of last year so it had to already be in circulation before the Chinese outbreak. The Chinese also found the imported virus after their own outbreak was controlled was genetically much older than the China outbreak again disproving the fact it originated in China. It may well have spread from there but it was also around in other countries so may explain why some countries like Italy Spain and Iran had far worse mortaility strain than what came from China...eho knows,it will take a long time to unpick the data. Whats clear is its going to be with us a long time like HIV and Flu variants. We just have to accept it and get on with life,we cant stay in lockdowns forever. Theres going to have to be a two tier society, those working and living fairly 'normally' and those isolating as best they can if theyre vulnerable.
