Christmas is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. I think marketing and advertisers have pretty much ruined peoples views of Christmas in their drive to make people spend money, just as they manage to piss people off about just about everything. To me its just another day and i make no special plans for it. I used to love Christmas when I had a family, rescuing a tree from the forest at night getting greenery from hedges and saving up bits for the day. When my O/H was alive and home I always cooked the Christmas dinner which was basic healthy fare but plenty of it and leftovers lasted two or three days in various guises except for one year when our Rottie got in first and gourged about a third of it (trimmed off the badly chewed bits and didn't tell the kids). Everything was home prepared and tasted better. The O/H was a believing Christian and that was remembered each year but less as time went on. Now we have lush adverts using rich tv twats personalities stuffing their bstard faces with shite that's about as good for you as muckdonalds and costs a friggin fortune and the meaning is forgotten.
Then there's the 'begging' adverts which for ffs you rarely see at any other time of the year unless it's for a foreign country.
People are basically sheep and easily brainwashed into believing what they must do is spend spend spend making the day just an expensive blowout and brag about cost before whining afterwards about how to pay for it but are still stupid enough to spend more in the fn sales.
I hate this time of year, maybe I'm twisted and just tight and out of step but commerce for me has destroyed what should be a warm and happy sharing time of year which as per the last few will be shared with the dogs alone and if it's stopped pissing down, parked up somewhere remote.
Bah humbug.
PS: - Come January bloody easter eggs will be in the shops.

OK...... Bit of a downward spiral there. fenrisulfr couldn't agree more, consumerism is ruining Christmas. Well ruining society in general actually.

We went into Glastonbury yesterday and most of the shops had very nice, tasteful Christmas displays which is much more my taste I was watching Grumpy Old Women re-runs on YouTube and Ann Widdecombe was saying that years ago, Christmas was a two week event and it was much better. I don't usually find myself in agreement with her but on this occasion I was nodding my head xx

As a parent the whole xmas thing focused on your child from society is awful. The brainwashing idea is true, as the pressure from all quarters is earlier and earlier and the message to spend is formatted these days by psychologists and behavioural specialists employed by big companies. As a child I remember my orange, perhaps some paints or crayons,a book, maybe a small toy and some clothing I already needed perhaps.I never remember feeling hard done by.We never had a tv and everyone was in the same boat, though I remember "the posh people"up the road got their kids bikes one year.As a parent though the pressure from my kids peer group was awful. It reached a point of genuine distress and confusion that their mates were going to Disneyland and they could not go too.I tried to explain that the parents got into debt and it was not so wonderful really but despite my best efforts damage was done.Especially when the mates came back with stories of glitter and wow.As the parents concerned were poor I dread to think how long they paid that off for.Even now ,all the parties and social stuff, spend, spend, spend should you not choose inclusion means people call you a killjoy party pooper etc.If home I do my best to appear not in to avoid people who usually never bother, sticking cards through the door and being ultra nice who never came when really needed.I just dont do fake.

Fully sympathise Cricket. I'm currently on benefits & my boy is constantly disappointed that we don't have fancy cars/new phones etc. I have to explain that shot like that isn't important, we have "a"car & "a"phone etc maybe not the latest model but not shut either. He does understand, but is under pressure from his mates who all have the latest stuff. Wish I could give him what he wants but also wish he could be more like me & see things for what they are, we live in a nice area & have food in the cupboards & clothes on our backs. We do ok I think but it just feels like a different fuckin world to the one I grew up in....π

So glad I never had kids! Childfree! I think if you had procreated they would be far out lovelies VW. Its not the kids that are the problem its the way the money grabbers use them to get money from their parents.

Could be, but I decided you never know what you will get. On the original topic, good news. Asda have re stocked with more hideous hippos. They now also have a glittery suitcase, a monkey, more ice lollies and more rainbows. Who is buying this rubbish?
