Its the internet that's causing the decline of the high street. I buy everything I possibly can off ebay, its the first place I look these days. But Vannie is right, parking, or the lack of it, has made any shopping trip a major expedition.

Another solution is to start making a lot of good quality stuff ourselves- bring back craftsmanship. because like all large companies from Tescos, to Amazon and eBay they begin luring you in with cheap prices and over the years until they have the monopoly then they start selling you crap quality for high prices.

This has been going on waaaay before the internet though. It started with the rise of parking charges and free parking at superstores. A superstore sells everything a high street does, often cheaper. Thrown the internet into the mix and small shops are bound to close. Yes it's more than one reason. It's cheaper for me to get the bus into town than it is to drive and park but then it's harder to get what I need because I can't carry it all back. So I get why people go to one place out of town, park for free, do their shopping and then go for a coffee.

To be fair, forget the rest, it's the parking that's the key. Even if the bus was free, do you think that people would take six bags of shopping on public transport? I used to be confused when people would go to Netto (remember Netto?) to save on food, then get a minicab home, wiping out the savings. Now I realise they just couldn't lug the weekly shop on and off the bus then home.

If you do your shopping at Iceland and its over £25 they will deliver it for free. They don't have the best selection but its a better option than the bus

It's all part of the master plan, once the shops are all online or in designated shopping areas there's more control. Imagine no high streets any more, mall the shops closed, bought and converted into housing. Huge out of town shopping areas fed by motorways, every thing you could want to buy in one place. Every single shop part of a chain and every shopping area almost identical. All automated, hardly a shop assistant in sight. Restricted time for parking so you hurry and thru the place getting what you "need" making space for the next customer.

It's not a case of could happen, it is happening.

You have a point, and it's more shocking that the big boys are suffering now. Time was companies like Boots and M&S were squeezing out the little guys, as they were the only ones that could afford the rents and rates. Now the tide has turned. Even the big boys have their trade taken away by the internet.

Boots will carry on as an online company, online pharmacy with the shop side selling crap you don need or want but at least there will be some place for me to do Christmas shopping.
The huge designated shopping areas will have a boots type shop but the bins area will be protected by laser guided lasers so no womb long there

Don't think I haven't thought about the bins pyke!! The place I go to regularly would literally have to build a new wall around the compacter to keep me out though...

It is sad to see another high st giant going but if the post office can go I guess anything can. WH smith should be OK as its a huge distributer as well as a retailer, I'm surprised Argos hasn't suffered.
