Our local council are just the same. Half the shops in town are empty so less people go to town shopping. Their answer to the problem, put up shop rents every year & make it impossible to park anywhere in or near the town centre. Fuckin idiots, couldn't organize an orgy in a bastard brothel!

Don't get me on shop rents and rates. Greedy landlords and councils have a lot to answer for. Don't get me wrong, customers can take some blame. They use shops as a showroom. The internet has a lot to answer for.

What I don't understand is they want all the cars off the road by year 20whatever but they carry on building out of town shopping precincts which kill little local high street shops. This is supposed to be progress.
A bunch of 5 year olds could run the county better than the lot we have in power.

Seems like the nobs in charge make a monumental fuck up of something, & the only thing they can do to cure it is make a monumental fuck up of something else....

They have shut doon three banks in the area and most of the shops are sitting vacant - just like the vacant c*nts running the cooncil. That's the vicious circle, isn't it, there are fewer facilities and fewer shops so people visit less often and then it's even harder for the shops that are left. And yes, the high rents and business rates - one of our local shop owners is moving premises and they've bought a property four times the size of their current place and the mortgage is only slightly higher than their current rent despite the premises being so much bigger and in a busier part of the town.
We had to stop using our local Boots as the service was so awful and my son's on regular meds for his epilepsy so we can't run out. I started using the service at the local Tesco instead and it's first class, we haven't had a single problem. And that's part of the issue as well; if someone is going to the supermarket to pick up their script - and can also buy their groceries, clothes, electrical goods, toys, pretty much any kind of thing you can think of - and get a cheap fry up - then that's what people will do. I continue to try to use local businesses and independent traders but I can see why people find it easier to go to one place and do everything under one roof.

Our local town, Cardigan, has refurbished some old retail units and has them available very cheaply, with parking 20yds away. Not huge footfall though, probably more suited to business that people travel to visit rather than impulse buy stuff.

Any business is better than boarded up shops. Nobody gonna walk round a ghost town but they'll go to a place even if the shops aren't what they need....

It's a start, isn't it, what I really miss are the little start up businesses you used to get where someone progressed from selling out of a bag or a market stall to a little shop. It feels like the odds are stacked against small business owners now and I really miss being able to pick up a little something for someone's birthday. It feels like hard work now to find something a bit unusual that doesn't cost a fortune. I miss being able to potter around town on a Saturday afternoon. It feels like a chore to go shopping now (which is probably why a lot of people do it online!). I hope those little shops do well, Boaty, it would be nice to see things pick up a bit. I did read that independent book shops are getting a bit of a surge in trade which was nice to read

This has been going on waaaay before the internet though. It started with the rise of parking charges and free parking at superstores. A superstore sells everything a high street does, often cheaper. Thrown the internet into the mix and small shops are bound to close.
