I read in the paper yesterday that many apps secretly sell your exact location on to 3rd parties without your consent. The list was quite extensive, but the only app i used that was on the list was tapatalk. im trying to remember which paper it was in and i will post a link to the article as soon as i remember! Found it www.wired.co.uk/article/wired-awake-110918

I don't use any apps for the very reason or mobile internet, same reason I won't have Tesco Club Card etc they are just tracking where you are and what you are doing.

Ive never used or installed Tapatalk but was getting regularly spammed by them because someone i know who does have it was emailing me from their phone.
You need to check carefully the permissions the developers claim to require for an app to work.Location might be essential for gps or mapping or navigation or astronomy apps but many other apps that dont need it demand it. Pixlr a photo editing app thats been around a long time has suddenly in its latest update demanded access to contacts and calendar to continue to use it so ive uninstalled it.
Be wary of some phone browsers also as some are continually feeding all kinds of data back to their developers in the background and wont turn off when you exit the browser. If you force close them in settings they restart themselves.kick them off your phone and find better apps that dont demand invasive permissions.

They are all gathering and selling data on everybody, that's the real (hidden) commercial purpose behind these apps. Everybody should watch The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson and reflect on where all this social media is leading us. Is it fiction or scary truth?

Compo. You must have agreed to those T&Cs to post them on this forum, whether you read them or not. I didn't write them, and I don't sell anybody's details, personally. Neither do I personally give details away. So please don't say that I do.

Everybody should watch The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson and reflect on where all this social media is leading us. Is it fiction or scary truth? To be fair, not all apps are invasive or explotative, many are built specifically to avoid data collation and sharing especially those built on opensource code. The problem is the platforms theyre running on, like android which is mining gazillions of gigabytes of data on every device connected and every device using Chrome for google and the same goes for Apple and Amazon devices. Not a lot you can do except root the devices to manually stop some of the background processes but googlev developers get sneaky by changing the code so that if you remove snooping processes the operating system wont function correctly. Simple answer is dont use devices or the internet but for many people thats not a realistic option...so you have to accept a certain amount of snooping and data mining if you want to continue using the technology.

Neither do I personally give details away. So please don't say that I do. We're on a platform that exploits data of its users, like they all do. Who reads the T&Cs in minute detail? No one. We come onto these platforms voluntarily to interact, the platform providers provide them to mine data and sell advertising, they dont give a shit about the users privacy or what they users talk about, its just a huge money generator,if it didnt make them money they wouldnt provide the server space. Its the same with the image hosting companies. They provide free hosting for our images on their server space, they dont delete them all, many nondescript anonymous images are monetised elsewhere in image banks without the users knowledge.Look at the T&Cs of many of them closely, users willingly contribute to their image banks without any guarantees that the images remain the users property.

Don't have a new fangled phone to get such shite but having had my AVG auntyvirus kick up 'you've got a tracking cookie' (latest ploy by the twunts to get me to buy instead of using the free version, stuff them) I looked at my cookies. Found hundreds, despite having 'anti-track' on and most were from sites or .coms I've never visited or heard of and some were Rusky.
War was declared and the delete button was taken off safety, the fooking spying barstards taking up space on my hard drive were well and truly slotted (didn't 'delete all' as it means restarting most of my pages) and it's something I suggest all peeps do. See who's tracking you from within.

The average openweb web page will place 30 or 40 cookies on your device for ads or tracking your location or browsing activity. Some place hundreds. The Russian cookies will be there because Yandex the Russian search engine,is one of the biggest search engines outside of Google.I use Yandex browser its got an extensive ad blocker and malware scam site blocker. Its far less intrusive than Chrome or any of the other common browsers.
The best option regardless of browser is delete all your browsing history every time you log off or at least once a day. Only things you need to retain are your logins and online form autocompletion settings, you can delete cookies cache downloads and history. You most probably will have to log on to some sites again but small inconvenience when you can ditch the spyware tracking cookies.
